The Houston Museum of Natural Science- one of the nation's most-heavily attended museums-is a centerpiece of the Houston Museum District. With four floors of permanent exhibit halls, including the Wortham IMAX® Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center, Burke Baker Planetarium and George Observatory and as host to world-class and ever-changing touring exhibitions, the Houston Museum has something to delight every age group. With such diverse and extraordinary offerings, a trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, located at One Hermann Circle Drive in the heart of the Museum District, is always an adventure.

With 3,171,690 in paid ticket sales from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2006, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has one of the highest attendance of any museum in the United States, following only the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and the American Museum of Natural History. This attendance represents one-and-a-half times the number of people living in the city of Houston. The museum has been within the top five most-attended museums in the United States for more than a decade.


Museum of Natural Science Exhibitions

  • Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China's First Emperor (May 22 to Oct. 18, 2009)
    • The Houston Museum of Natural Science is excited to present one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century, the tomb complex of China's First Emperor, Shi Huangdi, features thousands of terra cotta warriors that were intended to protect him throughout eternity. Since their discovery, the terra cotta army has been termed the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World.
  • Spirits & Headhunters: Vanishing Worlds of the Amazon (Oct. 9, 2009 to Jan. 10, 2010)
    • Invisible to modern society, some of these Amazonian cultures are the last people of the new world who retain their pre-conquest culture. As they become more well-known, their recognition as great artisans of feather ornaments grows. The exhibit celebrates ceremonies and rituals of passage unique to these indigenous people.
