BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions
About Adopting A Pet
Ok, you’re ready to adopt a pet from BARC. Now what? Here’s all you need to know about the adoption process and what you will need to have available when you come to the shelter.
The BARC Adoption Process
If you’ve found a pet online or wish to come in person to view our dogs and cats, the BARC shelter is located at 3200 Carr Street, Houston, Texas 77026. You do not need an appointment for adoption, but please allow at least one hour to meet the animals and complete the adoption process. We also have offsite adoptions.
If you find a cat or dog that you would like to adopt, you will complete an adoption application and meet with an Adoption Counselor. Your application will be reviewed to ensure that you can provide a loving home with the proper environment and care needed for the pet you have selected. The Adoption Counselor will work with you to make sure you have the information you need for a great start with your new pet. Be prepared to spend some time at the shelter--pet ownership is a lifelong responsibility so we want you to spend time getting to know the animals, and we want to help you to make a choice that is a good fit for you!
You should come prepared to take your new pet home -- cats and dogs that are already spayed/neutered are able to go home with their adopter that day! Unaltered pets are scheduled for surgery on the next available weekday and can go home the afternoon of their surgery. BARC supplies cardboard enclosures for transporting cats and leashes for dogs but you may need a kennel or crate for larger animals.
The BARC adoption fees include a variety of services -- age-appropriate vaccinations, canine heartworm (for dogs 6 months and older) and feline leukemia tests, spaying/neutering, deworming treatment, microchip, 6 week AKC obedience class for dogs to name a few - the total value of which exceeds $400. In addition, these minimal adoption fees cover only part of the each animal's stay at our shelter - please help us keep adoption fees low while maintaining the high quality of care for the animals in our charge by donating and/or volunteering.
