BARC helping to inspire Houston Pet Communicty at 2011 Houston Pet Expo at Reliant Center; Houston is going to the dogs and cats this weekend!

April 15, 2011 - BARC, the City of Houston's animal shelter, is participating for the first time in the 2011 Houston Pet Expo.  The goal of the event is to inspire and educate the Houston pet community about the many local resources to support pet ownership.  Visitors to this FREE event will also find numerous ways they can support non-profit groups, including BARC, who are attempting to change the way Houstonians find their next furry family members.  The 2011 Houston Pet Expo is this Saturday from 10am to 6pm at the Reliant Center, which provides more than "40,000 feet of pet-tastic fun".

Houston Pet Expo visitors to the BARC booth will meet adoptable animals, all of which have already received age-appropriate vetting and are spayed or neutered, reducing the up-front cost of care to new owners.  BARC is offering its animals for half-price in April, or $37.50.  Many of BARC's rescue partners and foster families will also have booths, which presents visitors a multitude of options to help BARC animals.  BARC will have trained adoption counselors on-site to assist adopters select a pet that best suits their lifestyle and family needs.

More people than ever have discovered that BARC animals are fantastic companions, as athletic, docile, loyal, and obedient as those bought via breeders or pet shops, and at a fraction of the cost.  Families that adopt a BARC pet get to share the special bond created by granting a second chance for a happy life.  Each pet adopted not only creates a wonderful and happy new pet home, it also expands BARC's opportunities to provide care for the vast number of homeless animals presented to our facility every day.

BARC is booth 229, adjacent to the PetFinder Mega Adoption Area.  Click here to view the event program, the floor plan map is on page 6.  More than 100 other exhibitors will also be on hand.  This is a great opportunity for Houstonians to learn about cost-effective and responsible pet ownership and how they can support BARC and other animal non-profits by volunteering, fostering, adopting or donating.

Houstonians who desire to support the shelter financially may make tax-deductible gifts in the form of cash, check, or money order.  Per recently passed City ordinance, all donations made to the shelter may only be used for BARC animals and BARC programs. The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly.  We encourage everyone to visit the new www.houstonbarc.com.
