BARC's Weekend Events Result in More Than 125 Pet Adoptions, Despite Rain
BARC Introduces Mayor's Pets of the Week and New Adopter Incentive To Spike Pet Adoptions In Last Month of ASPCA $100K Challenge

October 1, 2012 - Hundreds of Houstonians braved rainy conditions over the weekend to adopt a furry companion from BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions. In just three days, more than 125 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens were adopted from one of several BARC events, including the largest and longest-lasting offsite adoption event in the shelter's history.

"We have had a lot of adoption events since BARC's transformation in 2009, but this weekend's cosmic companion mega adoption event, coupled with traffic to our facility and other offsite events, made for a wildly successful weekend for us," said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. "BARC's animals deserve wonderful homes and we fully intend to have more and more mega adoption events like this to continue the trend. This weekend's adoption success proves that Houstonians really do want to help save lives and become a family to a dog or cat that truly deserves it. "

To continue raising awareness about the ASPCA $100K Challenge and engaging Houstonians in the effort to save lives, BARC has partnered with Pet Talk Magazine to incentivize citizens to adopt a furry friend from BARC. From October 1 - October 31, 2012, the name of every person that adopts from BARC will be entered into a drawing. On November 1, BARC will draw the names of a few lucky winners that will receive prizes including a photo shoot with Mayor Annise Parker with the photo and a spread in Pet Talk Magazine, and gift cards to local pet businesses.

In an ongoing effort to champion the adorable faces of some of BARC's dogs and cats, BARC also released Mayor Parker's BARC Pets of the Week today: Kingston, a one-year-old Affenpinscher/Chihuahua mix dog, and Sunshine, an 11-year-old Tabby/Domestic Short Hair mix cat.  Photos of Kingston and Sunshine can be viewed below and on BARC's Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/BARCHouston.

Mayor Parker's BARC Pets of the Week, Kingston and Sunshine, are available for adoption:

Name: Kingston
Animal ID: A1098717
Breed: Affenpinscher/Chihuahua
Age: Approximately 1 year 1 month
More about Kingston:  Kingston is extremely friendly, outgoing and makes himself right at home in any environment. In fact, he just let himself into the Mayor's office during his photo shoot and plopped right down on her furniture. It's very safe to say this little heartbreaker is not in the least bit shy. While his large eyes and floppy ears are adorably distracting, one can't miss his tiny gray mohawk, white-tipped paws and curly-cue tail. And If you have a squeaky toy football, he immediately becomes your best friend. He even jumps around on his hind legs in pursuit of the squeaky toy. He also loves going for walks and being held. Kingston came into BARC as a stray, but is now ready to go home with his forever family. He is neutered, has all of his age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and has been microchipped.

Name: Sunshine
Animal ID: A1099101
Breed: Tabby/Domestic Short Hair
Age: Approximately 11 years old
More about Sunshine: Sunshine has seen a lot in his time and is now ready to settle down with a new family where he can continue being the perfect lap cat that he is. Sunshine was surrendered by his previous owner and is de-clawed so he needs to stay indoors at his new home to ensure his safety. He is very sweet and purrs like an engine. He would love to sit on your lap and hang out while you watch television or read a book. Sunshine is the perfect name for this wise kitty, because his orange and white colors just sparkle. Sunshine is neutered, has all of his age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and has been microchipped.
