BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions
Mayor Parker's Pets of the Week: Ray and Egypt

October 8, 2012 - BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions announced the Mayor's Pets of the Week with Houston's Mayor Annise Parker today: Ray, a Border Terrier mix dog and Egypt, a Calico/ Domestic Short Hair mix cat. The photos below can also be viewed on BARC's Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/BARCHouston.

With the end of the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100,000 Challenge only weeks away, BARC's employees, volunteers and supporters are dedicating every waking moment to saving the lives of animals just like Ray and Egypt at BARC. So far, BARC has found homes for 1,307 dogs and cats since the challenge began on August 1.

"The last couple of months have flown by. Now we have only weeks left to make sure every Houstonian is engaged in our effort to save lives and win the challenge." said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. "Ray and Egypt are two of many animals at BARC that have big hearts and personalities to match. We wish all of the animals could be in the spotlight every week. They deserve it."

The animal shelter has many activities planned over the next few weeks to ensure a successful end to the challenge. The next big event at BARC is the Third Annual Pet Blessing, in partnership with Houston Pet Talk Magazine and the Episcopal Diocese, on Saturday, October 13th at 2:15pm. The event will feature live music, free food and refreshments, a pet costume contest and more.

BARC is also featuring $10 cat adoptions and $20 dog adoptions, plus fee-waived adoptions for purrfurred pets (animals that have been at BARC longer than 20 days) through Thursday, October 11.

Ray, the Border Terrier mix dog, was adopted just minutes after he returned to BARC from the photo shoot.

"The fact that Ray found a forever home so immediately demonstrates the high demand for BARC's animals and the fact that each and every one of them makes a perfect companion," said Moran. "BARC has dogs and cats in every shape, size, color and age. Not a single one is the same. That's why it's so easy to find the perfect pet - one that is unique and has a personality all its own - at BARC."

Egypt, the Calico/Domestic Short Hair mix cat, is still available for adoption.

Name: Ray
Animal ID: A1098323
Breed: Border Terrier Mix
Age: Approximately 2 years
Size: Medium
More about Ray:  In short, little Ray is energetic and full of life. From the moment he stepped into his photo shoot with the Mayor Parker, he wanted to be the center of attention - and he was successful. Everyone loved him. Once we got him to be still long enough to snap a photo, we also learned that he is very photogenic (as you can see in the photo). He is friendly and loves to be around people. In fact, Ray is so easy to love that he was adopted just minutes after he returned to BARC from the photoshoot. Although Ray is no longer available for adoption, he makes a perfect pet of the week because he represents the many other adorable and playful dogs available for adoption at BARC.

Name: Egypt
Animal ID: A1096353
Breed: Calico/Domestic Short Hair Mix
Age: Approximately 1 year 1 month
More about Egypt: Egypt is a very sweet and loving kitty that loves to explore her environment: in and around corners, under furniture, on countertops, and anywhere else she can get to. She is strictly and inside cat, so she needs to be in a home where she can do plenty of exploring indoors. She is a little shy when it comes to loud noises and dogs, but she is certainly ready to find her forever home with a great new family. Her brown, black and white Calico features make her unique and beautiful. Egypt was taken to BARC as an owner surrender. She is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.
