BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions
Mayor Parker's Pets of the Week: Mitzi and Foxie

October 15, 2012 - BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions announced the Mayor's Pets of the Week with Houston's Mayor Annise Parker today: Mitzi, a Tabby/Domestic Short Hair mix kitten, and Foxie, a Basenji mix dog. The photos below can also be viewed on BARC's Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/BARCHouston.

"The countdown to the end of the ASPCA $100K Challenge has begun and we are doing everything we can to hit our goal of 2,100 adoptions before October 31st." said Alfred Moran, Director of the Administration & Regulatory Affairs Department, which oversees BARC. "We need to find homes for 686 more dogs and cats in the next two weeks to meet our goal. That's almost 60 pet adoptions for every day our facility will be open between now and October 31. It's doable, Houston. We just need your help!"

To help ensure BARC finishes strong in the ASPCA $100,000 Challenge, the shelter's staff plans to host several big activities and adoption events over the next couple of weeks. For instance, some of Houston's favorite celebrities - Houston Texans Cheerleaders - will be joining BARC's effort to save more lives this Saturday, October 20, at BARC. The cheerleaders will be signing autographs and taking photos with adopters as they get ready to take home their new furry friends. More details on this event to come later this week.

Additionally, dogs will be available for a $37.50 adoption fee and cats will be available for a $15 adoption fee from Tuesday, October 16 - Friday, October 19. The adoption fee will be waived for BARC's PurrFurred pets (dogs and cats that have been at the shelter 20 days or longer).

BARC is also gearing up to win the ASPCA $100K Challenge's $25,000 Community Engagement Award. This award goes to the challenge contestant that most successfully gets their community involved in helping to gain online votes and engage in the effort to save more lives than ever. By visiting www.votetosavelives.org and voting for BARC between Wednesday, October 17 and Wednesday, October 31, Houstonians have the opportunity to help BARC win a $25,000 grant to continue improving BARC's adoption program. If BARC supporters were unable to adopt a furry friend from BARC over the last couple of months, this is a perfect way to help support Houston's homeless animals. Voters just need a Facebook account in order to confirm their I.D. prior to voting.

Mitzi and Foxie are available for adoption.

Name: Mitzi
Animal ID: A1100513
Breed: Tabby/Domestic Short Hair Mix
Age: Approximately 14 weeks
More about Mitzi:  Mitzi is a very sweet kitty that likes to explore and investigate her surroundings. Amid her busy schedule of exploring and investigating, she takes plenty of breaks to cuddle and purr. She's the perfect mix of sweet, cuddly and playful. Her unique colors and dark markings make her absolutely beautiful. This soft and cuddly little kitty is the whole package ladies and gentlemen. She gets along well with other cats but is not too fond of her K-9 friends. This kitten will not be at BARC very long, so act fast. Mitzi is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Name: Foxie
Animal ID: A1100398
Breed: Basenji Mix
Age: Approximately 11 months
Size: Medium
More about Foxie: Foxie is a very sweet girl that loves to play and cuddle. Her tail never stops wagging and she always has a big smile on her face. Foxie is working on learning the concept of fetching, but since she is so loyal and eager to please we're confident she will pick it up quickly. Foxie is quite the "velcro" dog: if you love on her a little bit, she sticks by your side at all times. No exceptions. If you meet this pup, be prepared. Your heart will melt immediately and you will undoubtedly have to take her home with you. She will do well with a family that can give her lots of love and attention. Foxie was found and taken to BARC. She appears to be crate trained and loves to ride in the car. She is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Foxie and Mitzi are two of many animals at BARC waiting for their new home. Visit www.Facebook.com/BARCHouston to find out more about the Mayor's Pets of the Week and other animals at BARC.
