A MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE GEORGE R. BROWN CONVENTION CENTER
09.17.2008 -- Several media outlets have erroneously reported that the George R. Brown Convention Center is a location of FEMA operations. This is not correct.
FEMA has no operational presence at the George R. Brown and, furthermore, it is not distributing FEMA vouchers at the George R. Brown.
PLEASE DISREGARD ANY PREVIOUS STATEMENTS TO THE CONTRARY.
The George R. Brown is presently operating as a hub for the American Red Cross, which is using the facility as a temporary staging area before transferring evacuees to more permanent shelters.
Nettie Millsap, 10, of Huffman, displaced to the George R. Brown Convention Center, spent three barefoot days at the center before her mother, Renay, told her, "I believe our Lord will provide you with new shoes within two days." The next day, city employees Suzy Hartgrove, above, and Brian Crimmins foot the bill for a brand-new pair of Nikes, much to the delight of young Nettie.
