Mayor Bill White, Council Member Ada Edwards, Neighborhood Leaders and CenterPoint Energy Work to Make Sunnyside Safer July 11, 2007 -- Mayor Bill White today will join Council Member Ada Edwards, community leadership and officials of CenterPoint Energy to kick-off a program to enhance safety in the Sunnyside neighborhood with the installation of new street lighting. A total of 151 new streetlights are being added to the greater Sunnyside area running from Holmes Road to the north to the Cloverland neighborhood to the South. The metal poles and streetlights are being provided by CenterPoint Energy. “Sunnyside has seen a resurgence of new housing starts fueled by many who once lived here and now want to return and live close to Houston's center,” said Mayor White. “We are working hard with the community to improve the quality of life in this great Houston neighborhood. There have been nearly 200 new housing starts in the Greater Sunnyside Area in the last two years. The Land Assemblage and Redevelopment Authority has purchased 117 properties in Sunnyside. “Sunnyside is a community with a wonderfully rich history, and is filled with people with great stories to tell. Many people appreciate this place and are moving here, including myself,” said Council Member Ada Edwards. “This project is a concrete step we are taking to improve life for all residents in our neighborhoods.” In the first phase of the project, 52 streets lights will be installed this month, largely, in the area bounded by Holmes Road, Scott Street, Bellfort Boulevard, and Canyon Street.
