CITY OF HOUSTON SMOKING ORDINANCE The City of Houston Smoking Ordinance, which will take effect September 1, 2007, will prohibit smoking in enclosed public places, enclosed workplaces, within 25 feet of building entrances and exit doors, covered concourses of outdoor arenas and covered waiting areas for bus stops and light-rail stops. For a copy of the smoking ordinance, go to the Smoking Ordinance Website and click on Smoking Ordinance passed by City Council in October 2006 (takes effect September 1, 2007). On August 1, 2007, Houston City Council passed an ordinance to establish Old Sixth Ward as Houston's first Protected Historic District. Old Sixth Ward was the first Houston neighborhood to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has the largest concentration of late 19th and early 20th century architecture in Houston.
