THE CITY OF HOUSTON WELCOMES NEW AFFORDABLE COMMUNITY IN DOWNTOWN HOUSTON’S WAREHOUSE DISTRICT

City of Houston officials today, welcomed McKee City Living, 650 McKee, Houston, TX 77002, to its growing list of new affordable communities.

“We are excited to add to the affordable home inventory in the city of Houston,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “The city’s growth requires additional housing, not only for people on the fringes but also for those that keep our city running: our emergency responders, teachers, healthcare workers, and others. As our workforce returns to the office and our job market expands, developments like McKee City Living fill the housing gap and provide more opportunities for Houstonians to succeed.”

McKee City Living is centrally located in the heart of Houston’s warehouse district near downtown. The three-story building sits on 2.1 acres near Buffalo Bayou and includes ground-level parking, a community activities space, business center, fitness center, courtyard pool, and much more.

“By investing in communities that are centrally located, such as McKee Living which is less than two miles from a grocery store, hiking trails, metro stops, a health center, and a public library,” said Director Keith Bynam, Housing and Community Development (HCDD), “we will ensure Houstonians attain the quality of life they deserve. One in which they can thrive!”
The city of Houston contributed $14.5 million of Hurricane Harvey Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR17) funds toward the total $35.5 million cost of the development.

CBDG-DR17 funds are awarded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, through the Texas General Land Office to provide affordable rental units for low-to-moderate-income households in the city of Houston boundaries that were directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The funds are administered by HCDD’s Harvey Multifamily Program.

McKee City Living was developed as a joint venture between the City of Houston, NEF equity, Bellwether, Covenant Neighborhoods, Inc., and Gulf Coast Housing Partnership, Inc. Covenant Neighborhoods, Inc. is a Houston-based nonprofit affordable housing provider. Gulf Coast Housing Partnership, Inc. (GCHP) is a New Orleans-based nonprofit real estate developer with a focus on community redevelopment and affordable housing across the Gulf South.

The City of Houston Housing and Community Development (HCDD) makes long-term investments to improve the lives of Houston residents by creating opportunities for every Houstonian to have a home they can afford in a community where they can thrive. Our department will invest approximately $450 million in federal, state, and local funds this fiscal year to construct and maintain affordable homes, reduce barriers to homeownership, support the work of social service providers, build public amenities, and facilitate disaster recovery efforts.
