City of Houston Issues Request for Qualifications for Community Center Artwork

The City of Houston is seeking an artist or artist team to develop a mosaic or painted tile mural for the Judson Robinson Sr. Community Center, managed by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department (H.P.A.R.D.).

The facility is located in the Pleasantville area of Houston at 1422 Ledwicke, Houston Texas 77029. This will be a new 12,800 square foot community center with a full sized gym, a large classroom that can be divided into two rooms, a lobby, a kitchen, restrooms, a computer room, storage and a mechanical room. Site work improvements will include grading, drainage, detention, landscaping and irrigation, sidewalks, parking lot, refurbishment of the basketball pavilion, a new playground and a football field.

Goals for the project include the following:

  • To create a world class art collection for H.P.A.R.D. with high-caliber art by artists from Houston, the region, and the world
  • Artwork that is reflective of the local community
  • Works that are regarded as an excellent addition to the City of Houston Art Collection

The deadline for submission of qualifications is October 30, 2016.

The City of Houston's General Services Department is contracting with the Houston Arts Alliance to administer the artist selection and project management.

In 1999, the City of Houston established an ordinance mandating that 1.75% of qualified Capital Improvement Project monies be set aside for civic art.  The program is managed by the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs.
