The Second Annual Ready Houston Preparedness Kit Chef's Challenge, hosted by The City of Houston Mayor's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security and the Houston Community Preparedness Collaborative, will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Houston's Historic Market Square Park.
Houston-area top-chefs will compete against one another to find out who can create the best dish possible cooking under less than favorable conditions. Chefs will be using only pre-selected, non-perishable food items typically found in a survival preparedness kit, which have been generously donated by Kroger. They will be cooking on camp stoves to simulate food preparation conditions during an emergency. Local celebrity judges, such as notable food journalists and meteorologists, will help choose a favorite dish and the winner will receive a commemorative trophy to display in his or her restaurant.
The Chef's Challenge is part of the ongoing regional Ready Houston campaign to inform residents about the need to prepare for emergencies before they happen. The program stresses four points: Make a Plan, Build a Kit, Stay Informed, and Know Your Neighbors. It is also is the City of Houston's annual National Preparedness Month event.
Come out to this exciting event, and cheer on your favorite local executive chefs while they cook up a storm! Together, we are working to make Houston a safer place.
