Stanaker Library Reopens

The City of Houston and the Houston Public Library recently reopened the Stanaker Neighborhood Library after a major renovation. Mayor Annise Parker, City Council Member James Rodriguez and Houston Public Library Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson led a Reopening Celebration for the community. Stanaker Neighborhood Library is located at 611 S-Sgt. Macario Garcia, Houston 77011, 832.393.2080.

About the Renovation
Customers of Stanaker Neighborhood Library will notice improvements inside and outside when they visit their neighborhood library. Colors used throughout the project were inspired by the original building and the surrounding community. The red and orange aluminum panels, new entry canopy, pavers, and purple ceiling will attract visitors toward the entrance and lead them into the library. New landscaping consists of plants mostly native to Texas. This includes a butterfly garden, Texas Lantana, Red Yucca, Mexican Feather grass, and Gulf Coast Muhly Grass.

Once they step inside, customers will note that all the spaces within the library radiate off of the entry area and new information desk. The library includes specific areas designated for children, teens, and adults. The library also includes a large meeting room, training room, gaming area, common computer area, and an adult living room. Of particular interest for everyone will be the computer chairs. Called the "111 Navy Chair," each one is made from 111 recycled Coke bottles.

The building has been made more energy efficient with a new mechanical system, light fixtures, increased insulation, and a cool roof. In addition, the interior features of rubber flooring, accents of color and maple wood throughout the facility, and an upgraded ceiling to buffer the sound levels.
