Cigna Sunday Streets Kicks Off in Garden Oaks / Oak Forest
Cigna Sunday Streets returns March 26, 2017 with three brand new locations - Garden Oaks/Oak Forest, Spring Branch and Brays Oak. Cigna Sunday Streets, a project of the Mayor's Office of Special Events and the Health and Human Services Department, provides a family-friendly opportunity for being physically active. For four hours one Sunday a month during the spring months, selected Houston streets are closed to motorized traffic, allowing Houstonians to cycle, walk, run, dance, and socialize in the street. Stores and restaurants along the routes will also be open for business.
This Spring 2017, Cigna Sunday Streets will be in the following neighborhoods:
- March 26: Garden Oaks / Oak Forest -- 43rd St. between Ella Blvd. and Rosslyn Rd. (1.0 mile)
- April 23: Spring Branch -- Gessner Rd. between Kempwood Dr. and Tiger Trail (.92 miles)
- May 21: Brays Oaks -- Fondren Rd. between S. Braeswood Blvd. and W. Bellfort Ave. (1.3 miles)
All events during the spring season will take place from 12 - 4pm. Cigna Sunday Streets is modeled after other events around the world. The concept originated 30 years ago in Bogota, Colombia. U.S. cities with similar events include San Francisco, Portland, St. Louis, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Minneapolis. Cigna Sunday Streets is a project of the Mayor's Office of Special Events.
