Dear Houston Hope Community Residents, We are proud to bring you the June/July 2007 monthly update on Houston Hope. Houston Hope is Mayor Bill White's initiative to reinvest in several of Houston 's older neighborhoods by providing affordable housing and improving infrastructure and drainage. As a participant of the Houston Hope initiative, potential buyers may qualify to receive up to $30,000 in down payment assistance. Currently, the Land Assemblage Redevelopment Authority (LARA) has purchased 706 properties. For a breakdown of properties, sold, under contract with builders, to breaking ground and available, please see the listing for each individual neighborhood. The City of Houston is also partnering with Urban Harvest, Inc. to bring a community garden in the Houston Hope Neighborhoods of Acres Homes and Fifth Ward INDEPENDENCE HEIGHTS Historical fact: After World War I, Independence Heights was the first African American town incorporated in Texas, a town with a disappearing history. It was consolidated with Houston in 1929 and remains a predominately African American neighborhood. LARA has purchased 64 properties in Independence Heights . Catholic Charities, Inc. has agreed to begin constructing affordable homes.
