City Controller and Parks Department Join Forces in Audit of Youth Sports Program
City Controller Sylvia Garcia and Parks and Recreation Director Oliver Spellman are joining forces to conduct a comprehensive audit of the department’s youth sport programs.
According to Controller Garcia, "We will be working with an outside consulting firm to expedite the auditing process. It is our goal to produce a report for the Mayor before the summer youth programs begin."
This audit is the first step in a comprehensive performance review of the Parks and Recreation Department.
Parks Director Oliver Spellman has already assembled a task force to review the youth sport programs and to assist the Controller’s office in making recommendations.
Says Spellman; " It is my objective, and the objective of Mayor Brown, to make this program the most effective and cost-efficient in the nation. The Mayor has made neighborhood-oriented government a cornerstone of his administration and we feel the Parks Department can be a leader in achieving that goal."
The audit period to be reviewed covers July 1996 through March 1998. Areas to be evaluated include payroll administration and expenditures relating to all employees, whether full-time, part-time, contract or temporary. Auditors will also look into the acquisition, distribution and inventory of all supplies and equipment that support the youth sport programs.
The focus of the Controller’s office, as outlined in this year’s audit plan is to streamline customer service and make the City more responsive to the needs of its citizens. Controller Garcia say "This is just the beginning of our long term plan to make city government more user friendly."
