City Controller visits Senior Citizens at Annual
Picnic
Houston, Texas-- Houston City Controller Sylvia R.
Garcia participated in the 6th Annual Senate
District Senior Citizen Picnic at the George R. Brown
Convention Center on Tuesday, September 5, 2000. Over
800 area senior citizens enjoyed an afternoon of food,
fun, and entertainment at this year's picnic, which
was sponsored by Senator Mario Gallegos.
The luau theme for this year's event was a favorite
with the guests, as they shined in their bright tropical
shirts, flowered blouses and grass skirts. Senior
citizens were bused from area centers on Metro buses
including groups from the Latino Learning Center,
Denver Harbor, Salvation Army and Ripley House. Several
lucky seniors took home door prizes including Astros
tickets, savings bonds and gift baskets.
CIty Controller Garcia says, "Senator Gallegos and
his staff have done a fantastic job with putting this
together. I look forward to this event each year."
Event co-sponsors include the City of Houston-Convention
and Entertainment Facilities Department and the Metropolitan
Transit Authority (METRO).
