CITY CONTROLLER AND PARKS DEPARTMENT
JOIN FORCES IN AUDIT OF YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM
City Controller Sylvia Garcia and Parks and Recreation Director Oliver Spellman, Jr., have joined forces to conduct an audit of the department’s youth sport programs.
According to Controller Garcia, “We will be working with an outside consulting firm to expedite the auditing process. It is our goal to produce a report for Mayor Brown before the summer youth programs begin.”
This audit will focus on accountability within the Parks and Recreation Department and compliance with city regulations.
Says Spellman, “Along with the Mayor, our goal is to ensure that youth sports is one of the most efficient and cost-effective programs in the nation. The City Controller’s Office will bring a valuable resource to help us meet that objective. The Mayor has made Neighborhood Oriented Government the cornerstone of his administration, and we feel the Parks and Recreation Department can be a leader in achieving this goal.”
The audit will evaluate the following areas: payroll administration and expenditures relating to all employees, whether full-time, part-time, contract or temporary. Auditors will also look into the acquisition, distribution and inventory of all supplies and equipment that support the youth sports program.
This audit is the first step in a comprehensive performance review of the Parks and Recreation Department.
The focus of the Controller’s office, as outlined in this year’s audit plan, is to streamline customer service and make the City more responsive to the needs of its citizens. Controller Garcia said, “This is just the beginning of our long term plan to make city government more user friendly.”
