The City of Houston has $48,000 dollars that it doesn't
know what to do with. Some of it could be yours.
"This is money that has been forgotten by Houstonians,"
says Judy Gray Johnson, Houston City Controller. "We
need to get the cash back in the hands of its rightful
owners. It is not ours to keep," says Johnson.
More than 1,000 names are on the list, each one is
owed $100 or less. These are individuals or companies
that have failed to request money that is owed to
them by the City. It could be a water deposit refund,
a payroll or vendor check or money from other transactions
with the City. In many instances, the checks were
returned to the City by the post office after the
account holders failed to provide forwarding addresses.
To find out if the City owes you money, check out
the Houston City Controller's web page at www.ci.houston.tx.us/citygovt/controller/unclaimed.html.
If you find your name or are an interested party of
someone named on the list, please print out and submit
one of the three forms available to claim your funds.
There is no charge for making a claim.
The City is required to hold unclaimed cash in amounts
of $100 or less. Under State Law, amounts over $100
must be turned over to the State Comptroller's Office
where it is held until claimed. You will find a link
to information about the Texas Unclaimed Property
Program on the Houston City Controller's web site.
