The Sustainable Growth Committee regularly meets the third Monday of every month at 3:00 P.M. The Committee considers strategies to promote environmental health, energy efficiency, and conservation of natural resources in our City. This includes activities to encourage recycling, air quality regulation, and fuel efficiency for vehicles.

Next Sustainable Growth Meeting: TBD

As chairman of the Sustainable Growth Committee, Council Member Brown has led efforts to move Houston forward with a "green" agenda. This includes a successful program to divert significant quantities of yard waste (90,000 tons annually) to a chipper rather than discard it in increasingly scarce land fill space. This, plus a new program to recycle scrap tires, will save Houston taxpayers over $1 million annually. Other "green" initiatives include:

  • Parks and green space required in all new development
  • Funding for a series of eco-friendly urban gardens and "farms"
  • Better standards to control flooding and to preserve trees and green space
  • Adoption of energy conservation standard in our building code
  • Standards for a more walkable and bike-friendly City
