District D Council Member Dwight Boykins Inauguration
January 6, 2014 -- Houston City Council Member Dwight A. Boykins was surrounded by family, friends, and the District D community as he took the oath of office at Sunnyside Park on January 2, 2014. The Honorable Levi Benton administered the oath as Council Member Boykins stood in front of over 250 District D constituents.
Many elected officials attended the event including U.S. Representatives Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green; Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Gonzalez; Houston City Council Member - District K, Larry Green; Judge Zinetta Burney, Precinct 7; and Constable May Walker. Former District D Council Members Al Calloway, Jew Don Boney, and Wanda Adams were also in attendance.
Entertainment for the event included several selections by the Drumgoole Trio and a musical tribute by Kathy Taylor.
“Whether it is President Mandela, Malcolm or Martin along with the Honorable Barbara Jordan and Mickey Leland who represented these areas, I can assure you all of them are smiling for a tall and regal young man from South Union who will be walking up the steps of city hall representing council seat D.” U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee said.
During his inaugural address Council Member Boykins stated ”I will work daily to make my community better, it is always an honor to represent your community”.
Council Member Boykins understands that this election could not have been won without the unwavering support of civic leaders, elected officials, and most importantly the citizens of District D. The Community Inauguration was designed to celebrate the history of the district while focusing on continued progress.
