City of Houston Council Member Mike Sullivan and Harris County Commissioner Jerry Eversole hosted a public ceremony on January 28, 2010 to celebrate the turning over of the new Kingwood Branch Library from the city to the county. The City of Houston built the $8 million, 30,000 square foot LEED certified building, and Harris County will be in charge of its daily operations. A grand opening ceremony for the new library will be held April 19, 2010 at 10:00 am, and will be open to the public.
Council Member Sullivan invited all librarians from the Humble Independent School District to tour the new Kingwood Library on January 20, 2010. A large group of librarians attended and learned about the many features of the new LEED certified facility and the many programs it will offer the community.
Council Member Sullivan requested a chance to meet with the many HFD personnel who work with Texas Task Force 1 who were preparing relief missions to Haiti in January. HFD District Chief Steve Sparks (District 102) hosted Council Member Sullivan and introduced him to the HFD fire fighters who were all on the same mission.
In response to the unprecedented earthquake in Haiti, Council Member Sullivan received a briefing about Haitian relief efforts being staged at Ellington Field. A tour was given, where Council Member Sullivan saw many pallets of supplies standing by for transport.
Council Member Sullivan was invited to speak at the Association of Clear Lake Communities monthly meeting this January. He spoke to the leaders of several homeowners associations in the Clear Lake community and gave updates on several issues affecting the southern part of the district and the City of Houston.
Council Member Sullivan joined Mayor White during a press conference December 18, announcing plans for a new animal campus at Gragg Park, along Brays Bayou and Wayside Drive. Houstonians will have the opportunity to adopt dogs and cats from the City’s Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) at the new campus. The adoption facility will also include a low-cost veterinary clinic as well as a dog park, open to the public.
On December 15th, the Houston Police Department officially opened the doors of their new pistol fire range on their training facility grounds off of Aldine Westfield. Chief Harold Hurtt, Captain James Jones and Regina Woolfolk, all with HPD, introduced the new facility to their officers as they deserve the best training facility to hone in on skills that are both needed and required. Council Member Sullivan attended the press conference and witnessed officers demonstrate their essential skills on the range.
On December 9, 2009, Council Member Mike Sullivan hosted a Christmas Holiday Reception for all Houston City Council Members, council liaisons and department directors to show his appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

On December 8, 2009, Council Member Mike Sullivan was the guest speaker at the Humble Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Meeting. During the meeting, Council Member Sullivan discussed different projects that are currently taking place within the northern half of District E. The projects include the Kingwood Library, a new community center, the widening of North Park and traffic improvements.

Council Member Sullivan had the privilege of swearing in the 2010 officers of the Kingwood Area Republican Women’s Club at their annual Christmas party this year. Upon installing the new officers, he also presented former President Halene Crossman with a proclamation acknowledging her hard work as the head of the KARWC in 2009.
Council Member Sullivan presented students and teachers with a Certificate of Recognition at Riverwood Middle School’s Winter Sports Pep Rally. The Certificate was to congratulate the school on their hard work in achieving a rating of Exemplary with the Texas Education Agency. Exemplary is the highest rating given, and Riverwood Middle School was the only middle school in Humble ISD to earn this high achievement.
Council Member Sullivan and his staff toured the near completed new Kingwood Library. The library is scheduled to be completed in early December, at which time the County will take over operations and maintenance of the facility. The new 29,500 square foot library is replacing the current 12,000 square foot library and has been designed to achieve a LEED silver certification. The new library will consist of a meeting room, children’s activity room, conference room, and four small study rooms.
On November 17, Council Member Mike Sullivan attended March of Dimes reception at Webber Plaza.The event was hosted by President Larry Kaiser and Dan Wolterman. Drs. Jose Garcia and Sean Blackwell of the Medical School also attended the event to provide information on the important topic of premature babies.
Councilmember Mike Sullivan joined several doctors and physicians in a Clear Lake Regional meeting hosted by Congressman Pete Olson. The point of the meeting was to get a doctor’s point on view on health care reform. Given the enormous importance of the topic Councilmember Sullivan looks to be well informed on the topic.
Council Member Mike Sullivan met with Wayne Dolcefino to discuss the multiple art projects that the Houston Art Alliance has initiated and the City of Houston is currently funding. Council Member Sullivan and Wayne discussed topics such as the Tubbs project and how Houstonian's tax dollars are being spent.
Councilmember Mike Sullivan joined the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce in celebrating the opening of Texas Citizens National Bank. The ceremony included a ribbon cutting and reception for the employees, bank patrons and the citizens of Clear Lake.
Councilmember Sullivan met with Brook Forest Home Owners Association president Susan Macki to discuss issues concerning a five acre parcel of land behind the neighborhood. While visiting the site, Council Member Sullivan suggested possible solutions in regards to handling the land backing up to the neighborhood.
Councilmember Sullivan attended a Space Center Rotary meeting last month at Bay Oaks Country Club. Council Member Sullivan presented a certificate of recognition to recognize the efforts and work put into the organization by past president, Miguel Hernandez. Space Center Rotary is an organization dedicated to the promotion of service in the community and higher ethical standards in business practices.
Council Member Sullivan joined Captain Curran, with Neighborhood Protection, a contractor, and reporters at 2407 Pine Bend to demolish a pool. Council Member Sullivan has worked hard with Neighborhood Protection to get this property properly secured and up to minimum standards; the property has been a blight and dangerous to the community, and Council Member Sullivan will continue to work on it until it is safely secured. The pool was demolished by being drained and then filled in with dirt; it took approximately a week for the contractor to finish the demolition.
Council Member Sullivan along with Council Members Toni Lawrence and Anne Clutterbuck called for a special council session to discuss and vote on an immigration screening program known as 287(g). The meeting was called off due to a lack of a quorum, and a news conference was held thereafter calling for Mayor White to hold a public meeting about the program.
HPD teamed up with a car wash to do a “pirate themed” fundraiser benefiting the Special Olympics. Council Member Sullivan stopped by to show his support for these officers, all of whom were donating their time to charity. Council Member Sullivan also had his car washed so a portion of the proceeds would go to Special Olympics.
Miya Shay interviewed Council Member Sullivan outside of City Hall October 23rd, in response to the recent lawsuit presented to the City of Houston to terminate prayer before council session. In answering the reporters questions, Council Member Sullivan said this is the first time for this type of lawsuit to be filed with the City of Houston that he is aware of.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Green Tree Homeowner’s Association’s monthly meeting in October with John Kuo from the City of Houston’s Public Works Department. Council Member Sullivan and Mr. Kuo attended the meeting to present the plans for the widening of North Park, set to break ground in April 2010. Council Member Sullivan also had the pleasure to stay and answer other city related questions for the Board Members.
Governor Perry acknowledged and presented HPD Officer Rick Salter the Star of Texas Award during a press conference October 21st attended by fellow narcotics officers, police commanders and the Salter family. He was given the award for his bravery when he was shot in the line of duty, paralyzing him in his leg and arm. Council Member Sullivan attended the press conference to show his unwavering support for Officer Salter and the rest of the Houston Police Department who risk their lives everyday.
Wounded Warriors from the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio visited the Houston Texans headquarters in October where they watched a Texans football practice and enjoyed a BBQ where they mingled with the Texans players. Council Member Sullivan had the honor to be the invited guest and to spend time with the soldiers at dinner.
Council Member Sullivan recently taped a five-minute news segment for Comcast’s Newsmakers program that will air on CNN Headline News in the Houston Area. He discussed several issues of importance relating to the infrastructure of Houston. Such topics covered included flooding, rail lines, etc.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Humble Chamber of Commerce's Annual Teacher of the Year Luncheon at the Humble Civic Center October 9th. The luncheon had a tremendous turn out to recognize and congratulate the Teachers of the Year from Lone Star College Kingwood, Northeast Christian Academy, and all campuses in Humble ISD and Spring ISD. Council Member Sullivan would like to applaud all those distinguished teachers that were recognized.
The Greater Houston Partnership along with the Texans for Tier One hosted a press conference to rally community and business support to pass Proposition 4 that would grant the University of Houston a Tier One status. Council Member Sullivan joined Jeff Moseley, President and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership, Bill Hobby, former Lieutenant Governor and Welcome Wilson, Sr.Chair of the Board of Regents for the University of Houston system in emphasizing the positive regional economic impact Houston would have if the proposition were passed by Texas voters.
The Houston Fire Department teamed with the Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Care Van last month to offer uninsured and medically underserved children, ages 0-18, free immunizations at HFD Station 70. Council Member Sullivan attended this event to lend his support to all the fire fighters, nurses and children who worked with and visited the Care Van.
Council Member Sullivan helped celebrate the opening of the Houston Police Department’s brand new Mounted Patrol and K-9 Headquarters located at 5005 Little York. The new $8 million facility allows for more room and accessibility for the community.
Council Member Sullivan hosted a town hall meeting at Creekwood Middle School to give his constituents the opportunity to hear about projects and improvements for District E as well as give them an opportunity to voice their opinions, concerns and questions. In the second year of his first term, Council Member Mike Sullivan understands that constituent input is vital to being a successful Council Member, and gives his constituents every possibility to be heard. Major projects discussed were the new library, plans for the new community center, the widening of North Park Dr, intersection improvements along major thoroughfares, sidewalks and recycling.
Council Member Sullivan joined Public Works Director, Mike Marcotte and Deputy Director, Andy Icken to sign a contract between the City of Houston and the San Jacinto River Authority. The City of Houston and the San Jacinto River Authority recently entered into a Water Supply Agreement. Under this agreement, the City of Houston will sell the San Jacinto River Authority untreated water and allow for the authority to reserve future water amounts.
The Houston Police Department and Chief Harold Hurtt held a press conference October 5th to announce and promote this years National Night Out. The annual event brings citizens and the community together to actively heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen the community and generate support to anti-crime programs and initiatives.
A public deployment ceremony for the 72nd Army Infantry Battalion National Guard was held on October 4th at Minute Maid Park. Council Member Sullivan attended the event to help send off the 900 soldiers on their next mission and to support the 3,000 citizen military men and women that were at the ceremony.
Council Member Sullivan was proud to attend and show his support at a deployment ceremony at Ellington Field on October 3rd. During the ceremony, Council Member Sullivan presented an official City of Houston Proclamation to the ranking military officer of the 1st Battle Command Training Brigade.
Council Member Sullivan and his staff had the opportunity to tour the Lake Houston Wilderness Park and took the chance to learn more about the master plan. The 5,000 acre park was acquired from Texas Parks and Wildlife, and borders the north boundary of District E. The first phase of the master plan should be complete by late spring 2010, and includes $3.5 million worth of improvements including roads, shelters, bridges, cabins, and guard houses.
Council Member Sullivan visited HPD Lake Patrol to thank them for their hard work on rescuing a missing swimmer on Lake Houston. HPD Lake Patrol called out three boats and used a helicopter to search for a missing woman after she didn’t return to her boat following an evening swim. The woman was rescued after two hours when people ashore heard her crying for help and Lake Patrol was able to respond and pull her from the water. She was treated for hypothermia.
Council Member Sullivan, his staff, members of the TIRZ #10 Board, and members of the media were given a hard hat tour of new Kingwood Library to see the progress that has been made on the new facility. The new library is scheduled to be completed in December and is located on Ben’s View Lane.
A “B”atteries “O”il “P”aint and “A”ntifreeze event was held at Ellington Field Recycling Center in September. Residents had the opportunity to drop off hard to dispose of items including Styrofoam and appliances. A total of 14, 255 pounds of BOPA material and e-waste was dropped off and picked up.
The Kingwood Area Republican Women’s Club held their annual gala at the Kingwood Country Club. This year’s event was “Diamond and Pearls” and marked the significant 30th Anniversary of the club. Council Member Sullivan sponsored a table at the event, and invited many active community members to join him and listen to the guest speaker, Mr. Michael Berry, former City of Houston Council Member and prominent talk show host on KTRH 740.
Council Member Sullivan attended a Friday night football game with Huffman School Board Member, Denise Shirley, to cheer on the Falcons against Hamshire Fannet. The Falcons beat the Longhorns with a score of 47-14.
Governor Rick Perry was the keynote speaker at a luncheon hosted by the Deerpark, Pasadena and South Belt Ellington Chambers of Commerce. Governor Perry spoke about the economic strength and vitality Texas exudes. Council Member Sullivan attended the event to support the South Belt Ellington Chamber, as it lies in his district.
Council Member Sullivan organized a meeting which included several City departments, Greater Houston 911, and representatives from Humble ISD to discuss emergency responder responsibilities for Humble ISD campuses located within or near the City’s ETJs. All parties gained a better understanding of HFD’s responsibilities, discussed future possibilities and brainstormed ideas for faculty and student education in regards to making emergency calls.
Class 205 gathered to graduate from cadet to officer from the Houston Police Academy. For the first time, the new officers wore their official badges and blue uniforms with pride as they celebrated their hard work and transition into a Houston Police Officer. Council Member Sullivan attended the graduation ceremony and congratulated Class 205 for their achievements.
A special called Water Resources Management Committee meeting was called in September to review the long term water supply contract with the San Jacinto River Authority. Deputy Director of Public Works and Engineering, Andy Icken, presented the contract to those in attendance, and was able to answer questions in regards to it. There was also representatives from the San Jacinto River Authority in attendance to answer any questions Council Members or the public might have had.
On Tuesday, September 14th, Council Member Sullivan joined elected officials, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the public to help welcome the new Staples office supply store to Clear Lake. Staples is the world’s largest office product store and has locations in 27 countries.
Council Member Sullivan, his staff and Marie Flickinger with the South Belt Ellington Leader were given a hard hat tour of Bracewell Library to see the progress that has been made on the new facility. The new library is scheduled to open in December and is located at 9002 Kingspoint Dr.
The Houston Fire and Police Department’s gathered together on September 11, 2009 to remember those lives lost eight years ago. Council Member Sullivan and his staff attended the ceremony to pay tribute to those fire fighters, police officers and citizens that perished during the events of 9/11.
The Fire Fighters Foundation of Houston hosted elected officials, the public and community leaders at their positive rally at City Hall on September 11, 2009. The rally was organized in an effort to show support to the Houston fire fighters that risk their lives everyday. Council Member Sullivan leant his support by attending and speaking at the rally.
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department with SWA Landscape Architects received that “Award of Excellence” by Texas Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects for the Lake Houston Wilderness Park Master Plan. The award recognizes HPARD’s vision to develop Lake Houston Wilderness Park into an urban preserve where city dwellers of all ages can experience the forest environment and develop an appreciation for the wilderness, ecosystem and inhabitants. The Park is located on the north boundary of Council Member Sullivan’s District.
Council Member Sullivan held a Water Resources Management Committee meeting early in September; he serves as Chairman of the committee. Mr. Mike Marcotte, Director for the Public Works and Engineering Department, presented the City’s 2009 Water Conservation Plan to the City during it, and answered questions that Council Members and the public had in regards to it.
On September 1, after being injured during the War in Iraq, retired Marine Cpl. Donny Daughenbaugh received a new home in the Victory Lakes subdivision in League City, courtesy of the Bay Area Builders Association and the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation. Council Member Sullivan, along with Congressman Pete Olson, attended the event to show his unwavering support of the troops and the mission of the organizations. BABA was established in 2005 to provide custom-made homes to wounded and disabled veterans. The Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation helps veterans readjust to their new physical and emotional challenges.
On September 1st, Council Member Sullivan attended the ribbon cutting of the United Service Organization’s new 1,200 sq ft. facility located in Terminal D at Bush Intercontinental Airport. On behalf of Mayor Bill White, Council Member Sullivan presented the USO with a proclamation, proclaiming September 1, 2009 as “Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport USO Center Day.” The new accommodations give retired and active servicemen and women the opportunity to use the facility while traveling through Houston.
News 2 Houston reporter, Mary Benton recently interviewed Council Member Mike Sullivan regarding the differing reports about the City of Houston’s budget shortfall. Council Member Sullivan leant his viewpoint on the contradictory reports.
On Sunday, August 30th, Governor Rick Perry was a guest and key speaker at Grace Community Church. Council Member Sullivan holds an established relationship with Grace Community and was recognized during their Sunday morning service for his devotion to the district.
Several members of the community, including Council Member Sullivan, attended a retirement party for Diane Blanco. Diane served as Lonestar College- Kingwood’s Director of College Relations for almost 15 years. Diane will be greatly missed by all those in the community.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Houston Police Department’s press conference demonstrating their new mobile crime fighting tool, which enables officers to immediately check the true identities of potential criminals on the streets. The devices are portable and allow officers to scan fingerprints and get results back in three minutes or less.
After being closed to the public for 10 months, due to Hurricane Ike damage, the Houston Police Department’s Telephone Rd. Storefront reopened Wednesday, August 26th. Council Member Sullivan and citizens had the opportunity to tour the newly remodeled storefront and meet with the officers, civilian employees and volunteers who work to keep the community safe.
Council Member Sullivan joined the Mobile Response Team at Kingwood High School to observe their traffic direction. MRTs were placed along Kingwood Drive the first two weeks of school to help sustain mobility after the resume of school. Many residents in Kingwood noticed the difference and appreciated the efforts of Council Member Sullivan, and the work performed by the MRTs.
To congratulate and recognize Clear Creek Independent School District for their impressive State ratings given to them by the Texas Education Agency this year, Council Member Sullivan presented the School Board with a proclamation at their monthly meeting proclaiming August 24, 2009 as “Clear Creek Independent School District Day.” For the 12th year, CCISD received a “recognized” rating and all 38 of the schools received recognition as “exemplary” or “recognized,” all the while, overcoming the reconstructive efforts after Hurricane Ike.
Council Member Sullivan attended the August monthly meeting of the Forest Cove Property Owners Association. He spoke to them about Kingwood wide projects and updates, as well as specific problems relating to their community including speeding cut-through traffic, and hurricane preparedness.
Council Member Sullivan attended a recent celebration honoring Lonestar College- Kingwood for their 25th Anniversary. Council Member Sullivan had the opportunity to present college President, Dr. Katherine Persson, with a Proclamation on behalf of Mayor White.
Clear Creek Independent School District hosted teachers and administrative district staff on August 19th for their annual “Back to School Rally,” held at Grace Community Church. The rally was held in celebration for starting the 2009-2010 school year and for the outstanding ratings the district received last month from the Texas Education Agency. Council Member Sullivan attended the rally along with Senator Jackson, Rep. Davis and Rep. Taylor.
Council Member Mike Sullivan attended the Lake Houston Community Association’s annual meeting to discuss the traffic problems on Kings Crossing Drive. Close to 50 residents were present and their primary concerns included cut through traffic, speeding, and motorists ignoring the posted stop signs. The Council Member had HPD Officer McKelroy, who heads the traffic division in Kingwood, with him to answer questions for the residents. Council Member Sullivan and Officer McKelroy both assured the residents that they would be working hard to get positive results in improving conditions on Kings Crossing Drive.
Council Member Sullivan attended the ribbon cutting for Lakeshore Elementary, a new Humble ISD school on West Lake Houston Parkway. The school will officially start school with the rest of the District on August 24th. While at the ribbon cutting, Council Member Sullivan had the chance to visit with Principal, Nancy Morrison, and Vice Principal, Matt Wiggins about their excitement and anticipation for Lakeshore’s first year. Council Member Sullivan also took a tour of the school and had a first hand look at the architecture and design of it.
Council Member Sullivan, his Chief of Staff, Monica Aizpurua, and North Sector Manager, Autumn Jodzio all attended Humble Chamber of Commerce’s August luncheon where Congressman Judge Ted Poe was the guest speaker. Council Member Sullivan sponsored a table of 10 which included his daughter and two staffers, Congressman Ted Poe’s Field Representative, Kim Brode, HFD District 102 Chief Randall Hartman, and active community members, Bud Lynch, Ted Mandel, Rita Daniels, and Ray Anderson. The Congressman spoke on several major current issues including his admiration of and relationship with the military, his objections to the proposed health care plan, and his discontent with the economic bailouts. The Humble Chamber also announced their new name, the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, and recognized Council Member Sullivan as one of their newest board members.
Council Member Sullivan attended the monthly board meeting for FOLK, Friends of the Library - Kingwood. At the board meeting, Council Member Sullivan made a personal contribution to the board so that they could join the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce.
Council Member Mike Sullivan attended the Kingwood Service Association’s monthly Public Safety meeting, and brought with him Houston Fire Department Assistant Chief Bill Barry. Chief Barry presented and explained several pieces of equipment that Council Member Sullivan purchased for HFD with his surplus budget funds from last year. The items Chief Barry brought with him to present were a K-12 saw, cyanide kit, and thermal imager; Council Member Sullivan purchased several of these items for HFD, as well as fog fluid and plywood.
Council Member Sullivan joined the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership’s Political Protocol Committee and other BAHEP members at the organization’s monthly membership meeting hosting Texas Comptroller Susan Combs. Combs spoke about “sustaining our economic momentum” to support a prosperous Texas. Texas Comptroller serves as the state’s chief financial officer, treasurer, revenue estimator and tax collector.
Chief of the Houston Police Department, Chief Harold Hurtt, came by Council Member Sullivan’s office to see the Council Member’s Wall of Honor. Council Member Sullivan has dedicated a wall in his office to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty in the City of Houston.
A briefing and tour was given to Houston Congressional Delegation in regards to Ellington Field’s Joint Reserve Base. Council Member Sullivan attended among U.S. Congressman Pete Olson, Texas Rep. Ken Legler and representatives from Rep. John Davis and Ted Poe’s offices. The meeting was held in support of joint military facilities, operations and training for a Joint Reserve Base.
On August 7th, Council Member Sullivan had a public ribbon cutting ceremony for the Kingwood community to mark the occasion of the reopening of the Woodland Hills Bridge and the tireless efforts of the City of Houston’s Public Works Department. Kingwood residents, city officials and the Kingwood Service Association joined together to celebrate the completion of construction and allowable public access to the bridge and neighboring Rivergrove Park. Several people gathered to cut the ribbon granting access to the bridge for the first time since April. Kingwood resident, Jim Harding was the first one to drive across the bridge.
Council Member Sullivan met Lake Houston residents, Cole Pilgrim and James Brittain, on Lake Houston to discuss the silting that is happening in Lake Houston. Council Member Sullivan had the chance to hear the residents’ perspective, discuss the history of the lake, and look at photos taken over time. Council Member Sullivan will be meeting with representatives from several agencies that could all possibly play a role in addressing this issue to come up with possible solutions and a plan of action.
Council Member Sullivan joined community leaders and the public in welcoming the crew of STS 127 back to Houston from their 15 day mission in space. The crew installed a one of a kind porch in space, delivered astronaut Timothy L. Kopra to the space station and returned Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata to Earth. STS-127 was the 29th shuttle mission to the International Space Station.
Class 204 gathered July 28th to graduate from cadet to officer from the Houston Police Academy. Council Member Sullivan attended the graduation ceremony and congratulated Class 204 for their achievements.
Council Member Sullivan and his staff had the opportunity to tour the Houston Police Academy to learn about the internal operations of the Houston Police Department. While touring, Council Member Sullivan had the chance to speak to Cadet Class 204 who graduated the following day. He briefly spoke giving words of encouragement and assurance that the City of Houston is proud ot have lal 66 new officers protecting the community. Lieutenant Faucek also presented Council Member Sullivan with an official police patch and photos of recent cadet graduation classes during roll call.
Council Member Sullivan gathered at the Johnson Space Center with the Clear Lake community, Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership and the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce on July 24, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Lunar Landing and all of NASA’s Apollo missions. The family event hosted Apollo era speakers that recounted the events of Apollo Program and explained the direction where they hope to see space travel go. The Apollo Program, with its 6 successful lunar landings, is often cited as the greatest technological achievement in human history.
Council Member Sullivan was interviewed by Channel 11’s Lee McGuire about the recent events surrounding the Houston Fire Department. Council Member Sullivan repeated his promise to support the Houston Fire Department and their investigation. He also had the chance to speak about his recent visits to all of the fire stations in his District. Council Member Sullivan visited each fire station in District E to have breakfast or dinner with the firefighters and take the chance to thank them for their hard work.
Due to the history of flooding in the South Belt Ellington region of District E, Council Member Sullivan hosted a regional flooding and drainage town hall meeting where invited representatives from the United States Congress, the U.S. Corp of Engineers, the Harris County Flood Control District and the City of Houston presented information about infrastructure and the current status of projects. Frequent flooding in the area is a concern to Council Member Sullivan and hopes the available information would help to answer unanswered questions. A follow up meeting is scheduled for October.
On Thursday, July 16th, Council Member Sullivan was proud to present the Houston Fire Department with $26 thousand dollars worth of equipment. For the past two consecutive years, and Council Member’s first term, equipment has been donated with the budget surplus money left over in District E’s annual budget. Items provided include chain saws, plywood, thermal imaging cameras, etc.
Council Member Sullivan met many crews at different work sites who are performing major concrete repairs in Kingwood. The repairs started in early July and are expected to be completed within 60-90 days. The repairs consist of removing old concrete with saws, reinforcing the underlying structure, and pouring the concrete again to make the roads safer, and more durable.
Council Member Sullivan and invited guests gathered at Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center to watch the launch of STS-127. The 7 member crew departed for their 15 day mission to deliver a Kibo Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility and Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section and to drop off astronaut Timothy L. Kopra and return astronaut Koichi Wakata.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce July Board Meeting, where it was announced that Council Member Sullivan is a new member of the Board. Melinda Stephenson, the new CEO of Kingwood Medical Center, was also announced as a new board member for the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce.
Travis Watson, President of the Ellington Rams football team, cordially invited Council Member Sullivan to the teams Membership Meeting on July 8th. Parents and players gathered at the El Franco Lee Community Center to listen to Council Member Sullivan give an update on the status of Sylvan Rodriguez Park, where the team hopes to call home one day.
Council Member Sullivan was interviewed by Fox 26’s John Donnelly about the recent events surrounding the Houston Fire Department regarding allegations of racism, sexism, and discrimination. Council Member Sullivan supports the Houston Fire Department and their investigation. Council Member Sullivan has started to visit fire stations in his District to take the opportunity to thank them personally for their service and dedication to the City. He plans to visit each station in his District within the next few weeks.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Houston Fire Department’s press conference on the recent activity at Station #54. Assistant Chief Rick Flanagan with HFD and the Houston Police Department briefed the media on what happened and answered several questions about the incident. Currently, the activity is still under investigation and few details have been made public.
To help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission, Council Member Sullivan presented a proclamation to NASA’s Ellen Conners and Brian Freedman during City Council’s public session. Today, NASA has a large fingerprint in District E and remains a leading force in scientific research and in stimulating public interest in aerospace exploration, as well as science and technology in general.
To help better prepare his constituents for this year’s hurricane season, Council Member Mike Sullivan hosted a Hurricane Preparedness Town Hall Meeting at the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Representatives from the City of Houston’s Office of Emergency Management, Harris County’s Office of Emergency Management, Transtar, the United Way, HFD and HPD were in attendance to present information and to answer questions.
Over the course of two weeks, Council Member Sullivan dedicated time to eat breakfast and dinner with all 14 Houston Fire Department stations in his district in order to show his support to the men and women that serve our community. He was impressed by the dedication and professionalism of HFD’s fire fighters that he saw while spending time with them. District E has more fire stations than all other council districts.
Council Member Sullivan was interviewed by Channel 11’s Lee McGuire over the controversial speed humps that were placed on Garden Point Dr in Kingwood. Council Member Sullivan has been a supporter of having the speed hump process reviewed.
Council Member Sullivan attended a luncheon at Lone Star College- Kingwood Campus hosted by Houston’s First Lady, Andrea White. Mrs. White did a presentation on the Kingwood community, its leaders and the thriving health education program at Lone Star College- Kingwood Campus.
Council Member Sullivan joined BAHEP’s Political Protocol Committee in welcoming Texas Legislatures Senator Mike Jackson and Representatives John Davis, Larry Taylor, Wayne Smith and Ken Legler at the 81st Legislative Update and Reception on June 24th. The event rallied local community leaders and politicians to receive an update on what our local representatives participated in and witnessed during this year’s legislative session in Austin. Participants discussed subjects such as transportation, Texas Wine Insurance and what they would like to be called during this year’s special session.
After days of heavy rain in April, a portion of Woodland Hills Drive collapsed developing a large sinkhole that measured 21 by 24 feet wide and about 10 feet deep. The Public Works Department has been working nonstop since then to repair the hole to allow residents access to the road and the neighboring Rivergrove Park. Council Member Sullivan has met with Tracy Wingate, Assistant Director of the Street and Bridge Maintenance Branch of Public Works, on site to look at the progress of the construction and discuss the status of completion.
On June 18th, Council Member Sullivan joined Mayor Bill White and Chief Harold Hurtt at the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Houston Police Department’s new Property Room. The new 11,000 square foot facility will house approximately 95,000 pieces of evidence a year and features moveable shelving and climate control attributes. Chief Hurtt presented the first piece of evidence to be stored in the new facility.
Council Member Sullivan was the guest speaker for the Exxon Retiree’s Monthly Luncheon. Council Member Sullivan passed out a copy of his newly published newsletter and spoke to those in attendance about his first year and a half accomplishments, and the upcoming budget process.
In response to several calls about heavy trash violation sin the Sky Scraper Shadows neighborhood, Council Member Sullivan and two of his staff members toured the area with the president of the neighborhood’s civic club, Hermon Gonzalez, to see the problem first hand. He and his staff took notes and pictures and are in the process of cleaning up the neighborhood.
Troop 8 of the Boy Scout’s of America hosted a 20 year celebration of its founding and a reunion of Scouts and Scouters. Council Member Sullivan attended and spoke at the event, held at Strawbridge Methodist Church. He also presented the troop with a certificate of appreciation for all of their hard work and dedication to the Boys Scouts of America and to the community.
On Saturday, June 6th, Council Member Sullivan hosted the first B.O.P.A. (“B”atteries “O”il “P”aint “A”ntifreeze) recycling event in District E that allowed residents in Kingwood the opportunity to drop off batteries, oil, paint, antifreeze, and e-waste. Kingwood was one of many stops the City of Houston made for residents to drop off hard to dispose items. The main drop off center is located at 5900 Westpark.
Council Member Sullivan had the visited and toured the current USO facility at Bush Intercontinental Airport where our military personnel receives comfort, morale and recreational services. Council Member Sullivan had the opportunity to speak with volunteers and walk the grounds of where our military ment, women, and families spend their time getting acquainted with new surroundings and situations. According to the Houston Airport System, the new facility for the USO is set to open in September of this year.
On Monday, June 1st, Lajuana Porter of the Clear Lake Lacrosse Association welcomed Council Member Sullivan to the association’s monthly meeting to provide an update on the fields and construction progress of Sylvan Rodriguez Park. The Association, founded in 1999, Clear Lake Lacrosse now encompasses a growing number of athletes from neighboring communities in the greater Bay Area. As the Club grows in size and popularity, it continues to provide opportunities for students-athletes to participate in one of the most fast-paced and thrilling sports around.
Public Works began road repairs April 1, 2009 on major Clear Lake thoroughfares. The work is aimed towards improving mobility on major streets in Clear Lake. While in the district, Council Member Sullivan stopped to see the progress that has been made on the streets.
Council Member Sullivan and BAHEP members gathered at the Lakewood Yacht Club in May to welcome Congressman Pete Olson. Rep Olson was invited to give a Congressional update about what is happening in Washington at BAHEP’s monthly meeting. After his update, he opened up the floor to the members of the audience to allow them to ask questions. Rep. Olson is serving his first term in the 111th Congress.
Volunteers with MADD stopped by the HPD Lake Patrol office on Lake Houston to give the officers food, and refreshments while they administered a BWI (boating while intoxicated) crack down on Memorial Day weekend.
Council Member Sullivan attended the dedications for the Huffman Stadium and Administration Building; both had major renovations and improvements done to them.
Council Member Sullivan joined HPD on Lake Houston on Memorial Day weekend in an effort to crack down on “boating while intoxicated.” In a push to improve boating safety on the lake, those who failed to take a field sobriety test were taken to an HPD Blood Alcohol Testing mobile unit where they were given field sobriety and breathalyzer tests. The No Refusal Initiative is the first of its kind and one of several over the summer.
Members of the Humble ISD school board, “Sconzo’s Stallions” were defeated by teachers and administrators, “WWI Memorial Warriors” in a basketball fundraiser, 38-36. The game was held at Kingwood High School and helped raise funds for the Creekwood Middle School’s service learning project. The project seeks to honor American Veterans of WWI in a memorial in Washington, D.C. To date, Humble ISD schools have raised nearly $14,000 towards the effort.
Council Member Sullivan had the pleasure to speak to almost 400 students at Riverwood Middle School for their Career Day. He spoke about his position as District E’s Council Member and what all it entails. The students and teachers had the opportunity to ask questions.
The Houston Solid Waste Management Department hosted its 20th Annual Driver’s and Mechanics’ Road-E-O on May 16th. Council Member Sullivan attended the event that gave the drivers and mechanics the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and compete against co-workers for a chance to compete in the state competition. Drivers had to maneuver trash trucks, tractor trailers and automated trucks through obstacle courses, and mechanics had to complete a written exam and trouble shoot practical problems.
Council Member Sullivan hosted a town hall meeting for his South Belt constituents at San Jacinto College. Many City departments were represented including Public Works, Parks, HCFCD, etc. Residents from the community had the opportunity to hear about projects and improvements within District E, and ask questions about issues regarding their area.
Council Member Sullivan attended Summerwood’s monthly crime watch meeting. The meeting covers the crime statistics for the month, as well as preemptive measures to take to reduce crime in the Summerwood community. Other topics that were brought up to Council Member Sullivan at the meeting included who is responsible for 911 calls from Summerwood, a subject Council Member Sullivan has been looking into.
Council Member Sullivan attended the anniversary celebration for D&D Collision’s Kingwood location’s first birthday. The Kingwood location is their third location and continues to provide the same great service to the citizens of Houston that they have been doing for over two decades.
Council Member Sullivan and Congressman Ted Poe attended the Sherwood Trails Park dedication to police, fire, EMS, and military members and to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Landscaping, a flagpole, and a plaque with an inscription of the two Kingwood servicemen that have selflessly lost their lives have been added to the park. Council Member Sullivan presented Certificates of Recognition in honor of fallen soldiers, Sergeant William B. Meeuwsen and Lance Corporal Luke C. Yepsen
Council Member Sullivan attended the Houston Police Department’s ceremony for police Sergeant Paul Ogden who was recognized for spending countless hours solving the murder of the department’s first Hispanic female, Officer Velia “Belle” Ortega. His investigations lead to the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of the murder weapon. Sgt. Ogden has served as a patrol sergeant for the last 26 years and has yet to lose his enthusiasm for patrol work, his role as a Field Training Sergeant and serving the community.
The Houston Police Honor Guard Houston Police Officers’ Union and The Houston Police Retired Officers’ Association hosted a reception in honor of all HPD surviving families. Following the reception memorial services were held in rememberance of those that were killed in the line of duty. Council Member Sullivan attended the reception and memorial services during National Police Week in support of officers currently serving our community and in remembrance of those that selflessly lost their lives protecting the community.
Gay Nord, who is the former CEO of Kingwood Medical Center, recently left the Kingwood Medical Center and transferred to Kansas City. The Board of Directors for Kingwood Medical Center, which Council Member Sullivan is on, presented Gay with a farewell gift to show their appreciation for all of her dedication to the Kingwood Medical Center, and the great leadership she leads with.
The Houston Police Department observed National Police Week from May 8 – May 15. During this time, many ceremonies were held in honor of those that sacrifice their lives so the rest of the citizens of Houston can live in safety and peace. Council Member Sullivan attended these ceremonies in respect to those officers.
Council Member Sullivan joined public elected officials, the community, and the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce at the Humble Civic Center for a National Day of Prayer breakfast. The breakfast, which was sponsored by the Northeast Ministerial Alliance, kicked off a day of congregating as a community to publicly pray for our country. The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 as an annual event by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
On May 7, Council Member Sullivan joined the community and other elected officials on the steps of City Hall to participate in the National Day of Prayer. Council Member hosted six constituents in his council office and escorted them to the service, led by Pastor Steve Riggle of Grace Community Church. May 7th was established as the National Day of Prayer in 1952 as an annual event by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
On Tuesday May 5, 2009, Council Member Sullivan joined Luis Jaime and his wife Kathy in the celebration of the grand opening of their restaurant Chachi’s. Although Hurricane Ike delayed the construction and opening of the establishment, Luis and Kathy have successfully opened their doors to the community. During their Cinco de Mayo grand opening celebration, Council Member Sullivan presented Chachi’s with a certificate for success.
On May 5, the Houston Police Department relocated its Mobile Community Outreach Police Station to District E. Council Member Sullivan joined HPD Eastside Division Captain Bruce Williams to outline efforts to crack down on burglaries of homes and motor vehicles in the area. MCOPS is part of the “Keep Houston Safe” campaign that seeks the public’s help in preventing crime.
On May 2nd, Council Member Sullivan joined Constable May Walker and the community at the Annual May Fest. The community festival brings the community together with departments, agencies and local vendors.
On behalf of Mayor Bill White, Council Member Sullivan attended and spoke to guests at the third annual Saturday kickoff OTC breakfast held at the Hilton. Founded in 1969, the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is the world’s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection. OTC is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
Congressman Ted Poe opened a new Western District Office at 1801 Kingwood Dr, Suite 240 to serve District 2. Congressman Poe and his staff welcomed the Community to participate in a ribbon cutting with the Humble Chamber of Commerce and an open house on May 1, 2009. The open house included a Certificate of Special Recognition presentation to Congressman Poe by Council Member Sullivan; it also gave the Community a chance to walk through the new office, and visit with Congressman Poe and his staff. The new Kingwood office replaces their previous office on Highway 59. Council Member Sullivan is excited to now officially be Congressman Poe’s City of Houston Council Member. Congressman Poe and Council Member Sullivan work closely together in serving the Kingwood Community.
Council Member Sullivan joined the Bay Oaks Community Association board members to recognize Past President Frank Weary. His dedication to the Bay Oaks community and his outstanding leadership as President was acknowledged and remembered. Council Member Sullivan presented a certificate of appreciation for all of his hard work as a community leader.
A large sink hole developed in Kingwood after heavy rains hit the area the weekend of April 18, 2009. Council Member Sullivan met onsite with Public Works and Engineering’s Assistant Director, Tracy Wingate, who oversees the Street and Bridge Maintenance Branch. The two discussed Public Works’ assessment of the hole, and what work is proposed to get the bridge repaired as soon as possible.
The BlueCross BlueShield Care Van held an immunization session at the McDonalds located at 430 Uvalde from 4 pm to 7 pm; Council Member Sullivan stopped by to visit with the Nurses and patients’ families while he learned more about the program. The Care Van visits schools, churches, shopping centers and several other easily accessible public facilities to administer free childhood immunizations to uninsured families. The Care Van program has provided more than 581,000 immunizations to nearly 357,000 children through October 2008.
On April 16, Council Member Sullivan hosted a town hall meeting in Kingwood to give his constituents the opportunity to hear about projects and improvements for District E as well as give them an opportunity to voice their opinions, concerns and questions. In the second year of his first term, Council Member Mike Sullivan understands that constituent input is vital to being a successful Council Member, and gives his constituents every possibility to be heard.
On April 13, the Houston Fire Department held a press conference regarding the Easter morning fire that unfortunately claimed the life of two of their firefighters, Captain James Harlow and Firefighter Damion Hobbs. Council Member Sullivan attended the press conference to lend his support to all of those affected by the unfortunate occurrence.
On Monday, April 13 a public hearing was held at the City Hall Annex and covered many projects including the Affordable Housing Dixie Farm Road Apartment Complex. Council Member Sullivan publicly rejected this proposed project and voiced his concerns for his constituents. Reason for opposition includes excess availability of other similar housing, impact on local schools, lack of support services to the residents, etc.
Council Member Sullivan chaired his April meeting for his Water Resource Management Committee to discuss the proposed Lake Conroe Long-term Water Supply Contract. Director of Public Works, Mike Marcotte presented information on the project, and the public had a chance to voice their concerns and ask questions. Committee members voted to send the proposal forward to City Council.
On April 7, Space Center Rotary Club members welcomed Council Member Sullivan as the guest speaker at their monthly meeting. Council Member spoke about the up-and-coming projects and improvements that are happening in the southern part of District E, and members had the opportunity to ask questions and speak with the Council Member following the meeting. The Space Center Rotary Club’s main focus is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.
At a luncheon on April 7, Council Member Sullivan spoke with the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Legislative and Public Affairs Division about several initiatives for his district. Topics discussed included upgrading railroad crossings, street repairs, the new Bracewell Library opening, a new community center to be built in the South Belt area and a traffic study to improve mobility in the Clear Lake area. At the end of the meeting, Chamber members had the opportunity to pose questions to Council Member Sullivan.
On April 7, Council Member Sullivan opened a new satellite office in Clear Lake to serve his constituents that live in the southern part of his district. A representative from District E will be at the office every Thursday or by appointment to better serve the community and allow people to meet face-to-face with a representative. This is the first time a District E office has been opened in this area.
Council Member Sullivan had the honor of speaking at the Houston Police Officers’ Union monthly meeting; At the April meeting, the Union hosted MD Anderson’s Blood Bank bus outside Union headquarters, where several Officers and Council Member Sullivan donated blood.
Council Member Sullivan joined WWE wrestlers, Mayor White and fans alike at City Hall for a press conference to celebrate an art show and auction that benefited the Houston Public Library Foundation. The artwork displayed was created and donated to the Library Foundation by numerous WWE wrestlers.
Council Member Sullivan attended the reception for Qatar Airways’ inaugural flight of the Boeing 777-200 Long Range aircraft. Qatar Airways, an award-winning Five Star service, launched new daily non-stop flights between Houston and Doha to meet passenger demand. The special airport celebration began with a classic water cannon salute as the jet pulled up to the terminal.
Council Member Sullivan joined families, friends and the community who all helped welcome home the astronauts of STS-119 at Ellington Field. The astronauts successfully completed a 13 day mission installing solar arrays to the space station and replacing a Distillation Assembly centrifuge for the station’s water recycling system. Council Member Sullivan has attended all five of the return ceremonies since being sworn in January, 2008.
Council Member Sullivan joined several volunteers on Lake Houston to participate in the 16th Annual event that aims at cleaning 17 local waterways. Since 1994, the Trash Bash has seen over 60,000 volunteers collect almost 2,000 tons of trash. The mission is to promote public education in environmental stewardship of our watershed by utilizing hands-on educational tools and by developing partnerships between environmental, governmental, and private organizations. The 2009 event was even larger due to the influx of volunteers who wanted to help clean up existing Hurricane Ike debris that still littered many waterways. The Lake Houston Trash Bash is one of the original clean-up sites. Lake Houston Marina has hosted the Lake Houston clean up effort and has volunteers clean two site locations, Luce Bayou and Newport Beach.
Council Member Sullivan joined HPD officers in North East Houston to work the No Refusal Initiative. Those who were suspected of driving while intoxicated and who refused a breathalyzer or field sobriety were taken to the Harris County Courthouse where a Judge issued a warrant to have a blood sample taken. The initiative is to help reduce the number of drivers who drive intoxicated.
Council Member Sullivan had the honor of presenting a certificate recognizing Laura Fields of Troop 3510 of the Girls Scouts of San Jacinto Council for her achievement in earning her Gold Award. Laura is a distinguished member of Troop 3510 and was awarded her Girl Scout Gold Award as a result of her commitment to excellence, scholarship, and service to her community.
On March 26, the Houston Police Department Truck Enforcement Unit conducted a Truck Safety Operation in the Almeda Mall parking lot. HPD officers inspected commercial vehicles to ensure their loads were properly secured. Commercial vehicles transport goods and supplies daily throughout the City of Houston and this enforcement assures that those trucks are being maintained properly and comply with required regulation. If commercial trucks are improperly secured or have overload this could cause these vehicles to overturn and threaten the safety on our roadways.
Council Member Sullivan joined community members, city officials and architects to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Bracewell library located at 9002 Kingspoint Dr. The library will replace the existing neighborhood library, be built to LEED standards and provide many more resources for the community. It is set to open at the end of 2009.
Council Member Sullivan attended the annual Houston Firefighters’ Memorial Ceremony with Houston Fire Department members, retirees, family and friends. The event was held in a Memorial Garden that pays tributes to all firefighters. The garden is located on the Houston Firefighters Relief and Retirement Pension Fund property and includes pavers, benches, the Wall of Honor, and the statue The Rescue.
Council Member Sullivan recently did a tour and business overview of the Mobil Steel International, Inc. steel fabrication plant. Mobil Steel management and employees expressed appreciation to Council Member Sullivan for his efforts to repair area roads and his general support of small businesses in his District. Mobil Steel has been able stimulate economic growth, and provide jobs to Houstonians in 2008 due to their aggressive commitment to investing for future work with investments like their new Peddinghaus drill/cutting machine.
Council Member Sullivan testified at the state Capitol, on behalf of the City of Houston, about Senate Bill 800, authored by Senator Tommy Williams. The bill outlines a water quality protection area pilot program applicable to portions of the San Jacinto River. Council Member Sullivan was chosen to testify for the City as he is Chair for the Water Resources Management Subcommittee.
Police Chief Harold Hurtt and Assistant Chief Vikki King announced their new Fatality Crash Reduction Strategy program on Friday, March 13th. It is designed to get drunk drivers, aggressive drivers, and all who are a threat to our roadways and driving public.
The Solid Waste Department held their press release to announce the implementation of their pilot Automated Recycling Program; the program allows residents to put all of their recyclables in one container that will be picked up on a bi-weekly basis. The program will last one year and be assessed to determine the effectiveness of it; if successful, the program could be implemented through out the entire City. Thanks to neighborhood eagerness, and Council Member Sullivan’s support, District E has 3 out of the 8 neighborhoods involved in the pilot program including Oakbrook, Pinebrook, and Pineloch.
Council Member Sullivan hosted a town hall meeting at the University of Houston at Clear Lake on March 11, 2009. The Council Member was joined by representatives from Public Works & Engineering, Solid Waste, Parks & Recreation Dept., Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department. Constituents were invited to come voice their ideas, concerns and questions to the council member and city departments for District E.
Council Member Sullivan taped a segment at Lonestar College to be aired on LSC-TV giving Kingwood residents updates on local projects. Updates were included for projects like the new Kingwood Library, the widening of North Park, concrete repairs, and several others.
On March 10, 2009 Council Member Sullivan honorably presented the USO a proclamation announcing March 10 as USO Day on behalf of Mayor Bill White. Council Member Sullivan and Mayor White recognized representatives of the USO at the public City Council Meeting. The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform.
Council Member Sullivan had the honor of presenting a Certificate of Recognition to Coach Kevin Johnson of the Kingwood High School Mustang boys’ soccer team. Coach Johnson reached his 500th win as the KHS boys’ Soccer coach with a 2-1 victory over rival school, Humble High School. This victory ranks him as second for all-time victories in the state as a boys’ soccer coach and 40th all-time in the Nation.
Council Member was Keynote Speaker at HPD Cadet Class #201. A strong supporter of HPD, Council Member Sullivan was invited to make brief remarks to the graduating class. With over 50 officers graduating, this was a significant boost to the number of uniformed officers on the street protecting citizens and property. Sullivan has attended 6 out of the 7 graduating classes since he has been in office.
Council Member Sullivan had the honor of serving as the Guest Speaker at the Graduation Ceremony for Houston Fire Department’s Class 2008C. After more than 50 weeks of training, 37 fire trainees took the Oath of Office to become one of Houston’s brave firefighters. Class 2008C began the Academy in June of 2008 and most of them began serving and protecting the City of Houston at their assigned stations the first weekend in March.
Council Member Sullivan did several interviews on the Credit Score Enhancement Program, which was Agenda Item #21 presented to City Council the last week of February. He was seen and heard on several local news mediums, as well as nationally on FOX Business and KABC Radio with host Doug McIntyre in Los Angeles. Agenda Item #21 proposed taking leftover Hurricane Ike repair funds and putting them toward the Credit Score Enhancement Program that would give up to $3000 to eligible applicants to decrease their debt ratio in order to improve their credit score.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Farewell Dinner for Lake Houston YMCA’s Executive Director, Cezar Gonzalez; Cezar was promoted to District Vice President for Brevard County YMCA in South Central Florida. Council Member Sullivan presented Cezar with a Certificate of Recognition for his tireless commitment to the Lake Houston YMCA and the Kingwood Community. Cezar is a compassionate, engaged leader who embraced the entire Kingwood community and guided the Lake Houston YMCA with his devotion to the YMCA philosophy.
Council Member Sullivan attended Opening Day for the Kingwood Girls Softball Association at the North Park Recreation Area. Activities included welcoming the players by their teams, games, and other fun activities. KGSA provides the opportunity for girls ages 5-18 to play fastpitch softball at both the recreational and competitive levels to help their players develop their moral, emotional, mental, and physical growth.
On February 17 Council Member Sullivan gave the keynote speech to the Southeast Chapter of Texas American Water Works Association’s half-day seminar on Current Challenges in Potable Water Industry in Southeast Texas. Council Member spoke about Hurricane IKE’s impacts and recovery from the City of Houston’s perspective. AWWA is an international nonprofit resource on safe water, which provides knowledge, information and advocacy to improve the quality and supply of water in North America and beyond.
Council Member Sullivan attended Kingwood’s monthly Positive Interaction Program (PIP) meeting in February to listen to Houston Fire Department’s Chief Boriskie address Kingwood residents on issues pertaining to HFD in their area.
On February 12, 2009, a wind-blown fire broke out at the Wolf Creek Apartment complex in Clear Lake, destroying 18 to 20 apartments and damaging a fire truck. Council Member Sullivan reported to the scene to survey the damage and lend support to all those involved.
Council Member Sullivan coordinated with Captain Driskell, Captain Montgomery, and Sgt. Paul Blackshear of HPD in Kingwood to deploy Speed Trailers for a one week period. The Speed Trailers were at 2600 Kingwood Drive, eastbound, and at the 23000-24000 block of the Eastex Freeway Service Road (outbound). They have the posted speed, but will also capture the speed of the vehicle driving by it. The data is collected and used for several different applications within HPD, and the City of Houston.
Council Member Sullivan spoke to high school students with Leadership North Houston on the role of the City Council in the governing of Houston. Students had the opportunity to meet Council Member Sullivan and ask questions about him serving as a Houston City Council Member.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Lake Houston YMCA’s 17th Annual Bridgefest as an honored Guest where he had the privilege of doing the morning prayer and served as a supporting spectator to those who participated in all of the activities. Bridge Fest is a celebration of the opening of the Lake Houston Parkway Bridge which links the communities of Kingwood, Atascocita and Humble. It is a 5K (3.1 miles) race for runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities and ages and the course takes route on the Lake Houston Bridge between Kingwood and Atascocita.
Council Member Sullivan and his staff were hosted by Chief Boriskie on a tour of HFD’s Fire Training Facility. District E’s team had the opportunity to see firefighters train on several different training apparatuses and observe training techniques both with HFD and the Bomb Squad. The tour gave the District E team a chance to ask questions, and it gave Council Member Sullivan a chance to ask what HFD’s current training needs are. The tour ended with Council Member Sullivan addressing Academy Class 2008C; he will serve as their Guest Speaker at their March Graduation Ceremony.

Council Member Sullivan met and spoke with students at Sterling High School on January 22 about how important it is to stay in school. Sterling High School prides itself on working collaboratively with parents to provide their students with the background and tools necessary to become literate, responsible, achieve academically and become productive citizens.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Kingwood Republican Women’s Club January Monthly meeting to visit with members, and enjoy Guest Speaker, Mr. Bill King. Council Member Sullivan had the honor of leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge. Mr. Bill King presented an informative Powerpoint presentation to the club on Houston’s Mobility and the problems faced past, present and future in improving mobility and reducing congestion.
The East bound lanes of Edgebrook Drive were reopened Tuesday January 20, 2009 at 2:00 pm following a 22 month City of Houston project that repaired all four lanes of Edgebrook Drive. The project also included installing new drains to help drainage in the area and widening the sidewalks. Council Member Sullivan joined representatives from the Public Works and Engineering Department, Freeway Manor and Arlington Heights Civic Association members, and local residents and business owners to re-open the street to public traffic.
Council Member Sullivan chaired his second meeting for his new Water Resource Management Committee to discuss the plans for the future Luce Bayou Inter-Basin Transfer. Mike Marcotte with Public Works presented information on the project, and the public had a chance to voice their concerns and ask questions. Committee members voted to send the proposal forward to City Council.
Council Member Sullivan attended the Houston Police Department Cadet Class #200’s Graduation Ceremony at the Houston Police Museum. The Ceremony honors the Cadets who have successfully completed their training and have earned the right to be pinned as Houston Police Officers. The Ceremony is also a time to celebrate and reflect on the Cadets’ 6 month Academy experience that included stringent physical training, long classroom hours, marksmanship, and other crucial training Police Cadets require.
Severn Trent Environmental Services (STES), the operator of Kingwood's water and waste water operations, hosted classes from Elm Grove Elementary. STES wanted to educate the students about the importance of water and water quality. They toured the Houston Ship Channel, broke for lunch, and concluded their day with a tour of the Kingwood water plant. Four full classes participated over a two day period.
Council Member Mike Sullivan served as the Guest Speaker at the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce’s Governmental Affairs Meeting. He spoke to those in attendance about his first year as District E’s Council Member. Subjects he spoke on included his role in Hurricane Ike, his newly established Water Resources Management Committee, new projects including the new Kingwood Branch Library, and many others.
Council Member Sullivan attended Precinct #239’s Civic Club meeting held January 9, 2009 at the Edgewood Community Center. He joined residents to discuss important issues facing the area.
Council Member Mike Sullivan serves as the Chair for this new committee that was formed in Janurary 2009 to deal with issues of water quality, water supply, and conservation of water, as well as issues relating to the Coastal Water Authority. The long awaited Luce Bayou project will also be studied by this committee. This first meeting included a presentation from Public Works on Water Conservation, Water Quality, and Water Resource Management, and discussions with Coastal Water Authority on the Almeda Rd/Sims Bayou Reuse Project and of the process of selection of professional service provides of the Luce Bayou Project.
Council Member Sullivan joined Mayor Bill White in a ribbon cutting ceremony for a photographic exhibit at Three Allen Center. The exhibit documented the improvement of relations between the two countries over the last 30 years.
Council Member Sullivan had the honor of presenting a certificate recognizing Matthew Miller of Troop 600 of the Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Matt is a distinguished member of Troop 600 and was awarded his Eagle Scout rank as a result of his commitment to excellence, scholarship, and service to his community.
Council Member Sullivan participated in Mayor Bill White’s Press Release announcing a victory over a sexually oriented business operating within the City of Houston. State District Judge Caroline Baker ruled in favor of Houston’s attempt to shut down a SOB that violated City Ordinance that requires SOBs to operate at least 1,500 feet from churches, schools, and parks. Mayor White also announced that Houston plans to fight several other SOBs that violate City Ordinance and operate without City permits in the near future.
Council Member Mike Sullivan was honored to serve as the ribbon cutter for the reopening of the emergency room and facilities for the East Houston Regional Medical Center located in District E on the East Freeway. The reopening was after an aggressive effort to get the facility open again after Hurricane Ike destroyed the building and equipment with extensive flooding. This facility provides care to a large number of Houstonians, and it is a great benefit to get it reopened so quickly.
Trees were donated by Tree Town USA to the community to re-landscape an area that had been designated and constructed to serve as a driveway for exiting buses of Kingwood High School. After Council Member mediated between the residents and Humble ISD, the driveway was finally removed and re-landscaped.
Council Member Sullivan and his staff toured some of the facilities at Texas Children’s Hospital. Texas Children’s Hospital is an internationally recognized full-care pediatric hospital located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. One of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States, Texas Children's Hospital is dedicated to providing the finest possible pediatric patient care, education and research. Facilities toured included the Emergency Room, Milk Bank, Neo-Natal ICU, and the Ronald McDonald House.
Council Member Mike Sullivan and staff members, Karina Moreno and Autumn Jodzio, toured the Ibn Sina Foundation Clinic in Southwest Houston. Ibn Sina provides high quality health care at low prices for uninsured and low income families. CM Sullivan got a first hand look at the services provided and the equipment used at the facility. Ibn Sina has a location in the South Sector of District E in Clear Lake.
Council Member Mike Sullivan, along with several elected officials, and many members of the community attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Kingwood Branch Library. The new library will be at 4400 Bens View Lane and will be located on a 9.12 acre cite. It is designed to minimize the impact in the forest area, and it will leave 70% of the site as green space. Following the groundbreaking, there was a reception held at the current Kingwood Branch Library.
Council Member Mike Sullivan attended a reception to celebrate Norman Frede Chevrolet’s 40th Anniversary. CM Sullivan attended and presented a Certificate of Recognition to Norman Frede for their continuing contribution to the Clear Lake Area. Norman Frede recently completed major renovations to their location, and the reception was an opportunity to show these renovations.
Kelli Rod, VP Community Relations, presented the City of Houston with 3300 large trees. Mayor White presented her with a Proclamation and CM Sullivan, as a member of the Mayor’s “Million Plus Trees Initiative”, thanked Ms. Rod.
Dr. Martin Basadlua attends Houston City Council's Wednesday Morning Session to be recognized for his service and appointment to the Lake Houston Tirz Board #10. Tirz Board #10 provides important financing for projects in the City’s Kingwood Community.
Volunteers from the Forest Cove community put a Christmas tree up on a corner within the community. They strung lights, hung ornaments, and topped it off with the traditional star. Council Member Mike Sullivan stopped by and helped the volunteers decorate the community tree.
Council Member Mike Sullivan had the privilege of presenting a Proclamation signed by Mayor White to young writer, Nabor Mireles proclaiming the day as “Nabor Steven Mireles Day.” Nabor Mireles was one of twelve young writers selected from across the nation by Time Magazine to be recognized for their writings. Nabor will have the opportunity to interview national leaders and other prominent figures as a result of this recognition. Nabor’s recognition from Time Magazine was a result of a writing he did titled “Dark Days in Ike’s Wake”; he spent days along side Mayor White and Council Member Mike Sullivan at Transtar during the storm to gather his information. He is very gift and a shining example of Houston’s best.
Ikea representatives presented a check to the City of Houston for $76,196.77 for the Hurricane Ike Fund. Council Member Sullivan presented Ikea with a Proclamation signed by Mayor Bill White. Ikea not only showed generosity to the City of Houston during the Ike aftermath, but they also paid their employees for the two weeks that they were closed because of the storm. The City of Houston appreciates Ikea for their generosity, and dedication to the City of Houston.
CM Sullivan Presents Certificate to Alice Rekeweg. As President of the Kingwood Area Republican Women's Club for 2008, Ms. Rekeweg grew membership, lead community efforts in several elections, and served her community.
Council Member Mike Sullivan presented a Proclamation to Mike Suffredmin (SIC) ISS Program Manager, Johnson Space Center Director Mike Coats, celebrating NASA’s 50th Anniversary. The Proclamation was presented at City Council’s Public Session where the Mayor and several Council Members offered their Congratulations and admiration to the NASA Program.
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recognizes J. Kent Friedman. As chairman of the Board of the Harris County - Houston Sports Authority, Friedman has a long history of helping local charities.
STS 126 flew the Space Shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station to deliver equipment and supplies to the station. After a 15 day mission, the crew landed at Edwards Air Force Base on November 30, and Council Member Sullivan attended a Welcome Home celebration at Ellington Field on December 1, 2008.

Council Member Mike Sullivan attended the Sunnyside SNC meeting held at the Sunnyside Multi-Service Center to listen to issues and concerns the residents have.
Council Member Sullivan attended a Ceremony to unveil the new playground at Cimarron Elementary. The elementary participated in the SPARK Park program, which helped raise funds and unite resources to give them a new playground. CM Sullivan had earlier donated $500 from his Council Budget to go towards the cause. The $500 check was presented at Teacher’s End of Year Luncheon in May 2008.
The mission of the Mayor Youth Council provides high school students the opportunity to develop leadership and citizenship skills while learning about city government. The Mayor Youth Council is modeled after the elected City Council with a Chair, City Secretary, At-Large and District Council Members. District E’s Youth Council Member is Christian Bionat.

CM Sullivan attended a dinner celebration on behalf of the City of Houston and Mayor White to celebrate the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce’s 25th Anniversary and the appointment of Honorary General Consul Jan Dryselius. The celebration took place on November 11, 2008 and the guest of honor was Ambassador Jonas Hafstrom. CM Sullivan presented the Ambassador with an Honorary Citizenship certificate.
Council Member Mike Sullivan presents official proclamation to City of Mansfield. Mayor Bill White send Council Member Sullivan to the City of Mansfield to show appreciate to their police department. Mansfield sent 7 of their officers to aid Houston Police patrols.
Council Member Mike Sullivan attended the dedication of the US Post Office located at 7231 FM 1960 in Humble, TX. The Post Office has been named the Texas Military Veterans Post Office by an Act of Congress, and the help of US Representative Ted Poe.
CM Sullivan served as the Guest Speaker for the University of Houston’s Center for Public Policy’s Internship class. CM Sullivan spoke to students about how he got interested in running for Public Office, his Council District, and various other topics. Students had the chance to ask him questions, and take photos after class. Many students also followed up with him after the class to interview him for their class papers.
CM Sullivan attended a meeting hosted by BAHEP on November 6, 2008 with FEMA Administrator David Paulison. The meeting was with several local municipality representatives to review FEMA’s response to Hurricane Ike, as well as to discuss long term community recovery.
Council Member Sullivan attended as their guest speaker to address their concerns over the limited annexation. Also in attendance were HFD Captain Karen Dupont and HPD Captain Bobby Montogmery; both explained what type of calls their respective departments respond to for Summerwood residents.
CM Sullivan held the second community meeting for Sylvan Rodriguez Park on October 23, 2008 at the University of Houston’s Clear Lake Campus. The first was held in March to gather community input. This meeting was to present the long range master plans for the park which included the input from District E residents at the first meeting.
Council Member Mike Sullivan’s office hosted the members of ALL on a Tour of City Hall Annex and City Hall. ALL is a continuing education program for adults 50 years or older. Council Member Sullivan recognized the group at City Council’s afternoon public session.
CM Sullivan spoke at a recognition ceremony on October 14, 2008 for the City of Fort Worth employees who assisted Houston after Hurricane Ike. CM Sullivan participated in Kingwood’s National Night Out. Kingwood’s NNO was sponsored by the KSA Public Safety Committee and hosted by Alspaugh’s Ace Hardware.
On October 6, 2008, Mayor White announced the collaborative effort to plant 1 million new trees in Houston called the Million Trees+Houston initiative. Council Member Sullivan attended the press conference at the intersection of Westscott and Prague.
Council Member Mike Sullivan and Pastor Steve Riggle hosted a community meeting on Insurance at Grace Community Church. The meeting covered insurance issues and the legal rights of homeowners who were victims of Hurricane Ike. Presentations were given about homeowners insurance, flood insurance, windstorm insurance, insurance claims, and the legal rights of homeowners. The meeting was open to the public.
Hosted by Grace Community Church Senior Pastor, Steven Riggle and Council Member Mike Sullivan. Presentations were given about temporary and long term housing issues for those affected by Hurricane Ike, as well as FEMA related issues. The seminar was open to everyone and the goal was to answer questions many had but were unable to get answered.
Council Member Mike Sullivan got a total 4 trucks of ice and 1 truck of supplies delivered to Kingwood post Ike. CM Sullivan, staff, and volunteers handed out ice and supplies to residents on September 17, 2008 at Woodridge Baptist Church, and ice on September 18, 2008 at Steinmart.
The City of Houston made the decision to install “air conditioning alarms” on all of the BARC trucks. The alarms are designed to go off whenever the temperature inside the holding cages exceeds safety thresholds. These alarms include an audible alarm, a flashing light inside the cab and on top of the truck, and a paging feature that will alert the driver if they’re away from the vehicle. The day after the decision, CM Sullivan met with the Vendor to review the new system.
The City of Houston officially welcomed back its local Olympians and Mayor White declared it Houston Olympic Heroes Day. Council Member Sullivan attended the event and assisted Mayor White in presenting proclamations to the athletes and their coaches. After the ceremony, spectators had the chance to get autographs and take photos with the local Olympic Heroes.
Council Member Sullivan monitors activities of Hurricane GUSTAV at Transtar. With Clear Lake (surge of water, and low lying) and Kingwood (far removed from the City, and many trees), it is important for the Council Member to work with our regional partners and to ensure that the resources necessary to serve the District are in place.
In an effort to improve the flow of traffic the first week of school, CM Sullivan requested additional traffic control officers to the area. Mayor White responded with MRT (Mobile Response Team) Officers, supplemental Officers from the Special Operations and Traffic Divisions, and HPD Bike Patrol.
The Airport Commision held the first of two public hearings concerning the proposed Airport Compatible Land Use Regulations for Bush Intercontinental, Hobby, and Ellington Airports. The hearing was at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Rickmers Line, which operates a worldwide fleet of ships, honored the City of Houston by naming one the RICKMERS HOUSTON. CM Sullivan attended the ceremony on August 21, 2008.
CM Sullivan’s staffers, Monica Aizpurua (Chief of Staff), Karina Moreno (District Outreach Coordinator), and Autumn Jodzio (South Sector Manager) took a tour of NASA. Guided by NASA’s Aaron Barrera, the staff saw several different facilities at NASA including the training pool, mock ups of several different space craft, and Mission Control.
On July 17, 2008, CM Sullivan hosted a courtesy visit for two officials from Houston’s sister city, Chiba, Japan. Mr. Mamoru Tano and Mr. Rikuro Shikama exchanged gifts with CM Sullivan and discussed projects both cities were undertaking and what they could learn from each other.
As an active supporter of the Mayor's Protocol Office, CM Sullivan met with Dr. Nzeyimana on July 16, 2008 to explore ways that the City of Houston could assist Rwanda with their health care initiatives.
Council Member Sullivan met with Clear Lake City Water Authority vice president John Branch, board secretary Bob Savely, general manager James Byrd, and water superintendent Roy Sears. After a briefing on the operations of the CLCWA, Council Member Sullivan toured several of their facilities, including waste water treatment, and potable water storage.
Over 1,000 bike riders registered for the first Moonlight Classic ride down Memorial Drive. With the downtown skyscrapers as a backdrop, a great time was had by all. HPD also had on display equipment from their various divisions, including SWAT, helicopter patrol, bomb squad, traffic enforcement, special operations, bike patrol, and others.
Council Member Mike Sullivan was at Ellington Field on Father's Day to welcome the crew of STS-124 home. This was a very special Father's Day to the Astronauts and their families. STS-124 delivered the large Japanese module “Hope” to the International Space Station in a thirteen day mission that included three staged space walks.
Council Member Sullivan stopped by to thank Dr. Norman Berkman and his supportive wife, Melinda, for their longtime support of the First Tee Junior Golf Program at the City's F. M. Law Park golf course. The mission of First Tee is “ To impact the lives of young people in the Greater Houston Area by creating affordable and accessible golf facilities primarily to serve those who have not previously had the exposure to the game and its positive values.” Their June 14th tournament was a sellout.
The Belize Soccer Team arrived in Houston at the J.W. Marriott Galleria Hotel. The team was scheduled to play Mexico in the World Cup Quarter Finals at Houston 's Reliant Stadium. Council Member Mike Sullivan was at the reception, to greet and welcome the Team and to present lapel pins to every member of the soccer team.
CM Sullivan and the Houston Airport System hosted a town hall meeting on the Land Use Regulation Proposal for Ellington Airport at San Jacinto College- South on June 8, 2008. The meeting included a presentation, and residents were allowed to ask questions on concerns they had.
Autumn Jodzio was the recipient of the Center for Public Policy's spring 2008 Government Internship Award. While tackling a full course load at UH-Downtown and maintaining a solid GPA, Autumn impressed Sullivan's Chief of Staff so much that she offered her full time employment upon graduation in June 2008.
The Minnetex Super Neighborhood Council represents an area composed mainly of scattered homes, small large-lot subdivisions and occasional industrial facilities. There are acres of raw land which now has quick access to the rest of the metropolitan area. For now impediments to new growth are the lack of water and sewer lines.
Galena Park ISD school was in need of playground equipment. The SPARK program had qualified the campus for a major renovation of their playground. Knowing the school was in District E, Council Member Sullivan donated $500 from his council office budget to help them with the program. The check was presented at the Teacher’s End of Year Luncheon.
Houston Aviation System hosted Council Member Sullivan to brief him about growth of the City's 3 airports, security issues, technology, expansion plans, and airport customers and clients.
Council Member Mike Sullivan held a Hurricane Awareness Town Hall meeting for residents of the Clear Lake portion of District E. Presentations were made by Houston Fire Dept, TRANSTAR, Harris County Office of Emergency Management, United Way, and the Council Member. The meeting went beyond the 2 hours that were allotted for it. University of Houston Clear Lake was gracious enough to host the presentation.
Council Member Sullivan and his staff stopped by the Houston Police Officers Union to show their support for Houston Police Officer, Kevin Warren. The Houston Police Officers Union held a BBQ Benefit to support Officer Warren, who lost his home to a fire in February of 2008, and is the single father of four young girls. BBQ plates, a live auction as well as a silent auction were among some of the activities to help raise money for Officer Warren's family.
Fire station #8 held an open house and dedication to celebrate its new service on May 22, 2008. Located in downtown Houston, this station is the "first in" on all calls in the central business district.
Council Member Sullivan met with residents from the South Belt/Ellington area at San Jacinto College South on May 14, 2008. He was joined by representatives from Solid Waste, HFD, Public Works, HPD, and his Council Office Team.
Council Member Sullivan attended a luncheon at the South Belt Ellington Chamber of Commerce. The top 10 students graduating from Dobie High School were recognized, and Sullivan presented each with a Certificate of Recognition from his Council office.
A delegation from the Changzhou National Hi-Tech District, Foreign Investment Bureau, visited with Council Member Mike Sullivan to encourage mutually beneficial business relationships between the City of Houston and the Changzhou Province.
The City of Houston has been a longtime member of BAHEP. With looming budget cuts in the NASA budget, Council Member Sullivan requested that the City of Houston's portion of funding be doubled for FY 2009. Mayor Bill White recognized the multitude of benefits by doing so, and joined with Council Member Sullivan at a press conference to make the public announcement.
There is a dedicated Parks Dept crew that maintains the medians in Kingwood, picking up litter, edging, mowing, and providing other important services to the community. Council Member Sullivan toured the Parks Dept satellite depot in Kingwood, and thanked the crew for the hard work they do on a regular basis, and saw firsthand what equipment they used as they accomplished their duties.
Council Member Sullivan was invited to participate in a ribbon cutting for Maplebrook Elementary School's new track on May 2, 2008. This was an important project in that the funds were raised by the PTO of the school. Several hundred students happily participated in the ceremony, as did Humble ISD Superintendent Guy Sconzo, and Board Vice President Dan Huberty. Maplebrook's principal, Marcia Reineking, is a longtime resident of Kingwood.

Chief Shiflet retired on April 30, 2008, after 50 years in the law enforcement fields. He attended a surprise retirement party, which was attended by Harris County Commissioner Jerry Eversole, State Representative Joe Crabb, Constable Ron Hickman, Council Member Mike Sullivan, Humble Mayor Donnie McManness, Humble Police Chief Gary Warman, and numerous other dignitaries.

Several residents had driven over a large manhole covering, as well as the curb and sidewalk. Almost everyone who hit these ended up with a flat tire. In the interests of public safety, Council Member Sullivan requested that traffic bollards be installed to make the hazards more visible.
Sylvan Rodriguez Park is one of our area’s overlooked assets. Realizing this, Houston City Council Member Mike Sullivan plans a series of meetings to gather public input on how the park can be utilized to its best use.
Council Member Sullivan was proud to represent the constituents of District E in the welcoming ceremony for the crew of NASA Space Shuttle Mission STS-123. The crew spent over 15 days in space delivering new modules to the International Space Station.
The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department began garbage and yard trimmings collection in Camino South, Oak Brook, Oak Brook West, and Meadow Green due to a contract cancellation of a private hauler the community association. Council Member Sullivan had the pleasure of riding with the Solid Waste crew on the first day of service.
Administrators requested that the City of Houston replace the fence that had fallen into disrepair, was an eyesore, and did not provide adequate security.
Council Member Sullivan was asked to attend a meeting of Kings Lake Homeowners Association to hear their concerns about construction at Kingwood High School and how it was negatively affecting them. Humble ISD Superintendent Guy Sconzo also attended to explain how the construction process was unfolding.
HPD truck enforcement division conducted random inspections of commercial vehicles traveling Highway 59 north. Chemical tankers, gravel trucks, bobtails, dump trucks, and other commercial vehicles were targeted during a 6 hour inspection.
Council Member Sullivan, along with Mayor's Deputy Director of Operations Terence Fontaine, met with Mobility Response Team officers at HPD headquarters to thank them for their dedicated service.
Council Member Sullivan rode along with Solid Waste and helped deliver new garbage bins to the four communities in Clear Lake that received new Solid Waste service.
