Mayor Turner Announces / Congratulates New Round of Arts Grant Recipients

July 1, 2016 -- Mayor Sylvester Turner has approved Fiscal Year 2017 grants for the arts awarded through Houston Arts Alliance. The grants totaling $3,078,738 are for the term beginning July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, and are awarded to 104 arts and cultural organizations in the City of Houston.  The grants are funded through a portion of Hotel Occupancy Tax that is dedicated to the arts as part of the City’s cultural priorities guided by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA).

“Houston is already known for energy, space and medicine,” said Mayor Turner. “More and more people are also discovering we are one of the best places in the world for the arts.  Arts and culture is central to both quality of life and quality of place and I congratulate this year’s stellar grant recipients for the inspired work they do for our city. Creative, vital and strong cities are attractive to investors in industry, business and tourism, which generates employment opportunities, expands the tax base and generally adds to the real wealth of the community.”

Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) is the city’s local arts agency. The complete list of awardees will be posted on the HAA website upon notification and contracting. For more information about grants and other creative opportunities, visit www.houstonartsalliance.com.
