ART IN CITY HALL AND CITY HALL ANNEX

HOUSTON CITY HALL ART ON LOAN PROGRAM

December 1, 2005 -- The works of 125 Houston artists are now being featured in a unique art exhibit throughout City Hall.  The City of Houston Municipal Art Commission  is sponsoring the ART ON LOAN exhibit that will present the works of Houston-area artists to visitors and employees of the City. The art will be located in hallways and conference rooms located on the lower floors of the  historic City Hall building, 901 Bagby.

The exhibit is designed  to promote and foster understanding of local artists and their work. "This is a perfect opportunity to enliven the corridors and meeting rooms of City Hall with vibrant works of art, as well as showcase the strong artistic talent that lies right here in Houston," said Municipal Art Commissioner Gus Kopriva, who curated the show. An open call and acceptance for work resulted in a collection of two-dimensional works including graphics, watercolors, drawings, painting, photography and collage from all segments of the City. No specific theme was specified.

Artists in the exhibit represent the diversity of Houston, and include those who were either born, work, teach or received their education in the Houston area. Artists at all stages of their careers are represented, both living and deceased.

A formal opening ceremony will be held, Wed., Dec. 14, 2005, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the City Hall Rotunda. The event will feature some of the artists and guided tours of portions of the exhibit.
