Mayor Bill White is committed to the growth and development of the Houston arts community and local Houston artists. The Mayor's Cultural Affairs Office is responsible for managing Houston's civic art program, working with the arts community (including the museum and theater districts) and implementing the Mayor's historic preservation initiatives.

Listed below are the ongoing projects for which the Cultural Affairs Office is responsible.

Percent for Art Program
In 1999, the City of Houston established an ordinance mandating that 1.75% of qualified Capital Improvement Project monies be set aside for civic art. The City contracts with the Houston Arts Alliance to manage our civic program including the conservation of existing pieces in the City's collection.

Current Call for Artists
The City recently issued a call for artists for seven civic art projects in various parts of the city. These locations include Flores Library, Kashmere Multi-Service Center , and the WaterWorks Water Museum.

Art in City Hall and Art in City Hall Annex
Over 200 local artists are showcased annually in both City Hall and the City Hall Annex. Please contact the Houston Arts Alliance if you are interested in receiving information regarding our next call for artists.

Historic Preservation Initiatives
We work on a variety of historic preservation initiatives including strengthening the historic preservation ordinance, creating tax incentives for preservation, and developing outreach materials.

Houston Archeological and Historical Commission
The Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission (HAHC), an 11-member board, makes recommendations to City Council on historic properties. The board reviews requests for Historic District designations, City Landmark and Protected City Landmark sites, archaeological sites and issues Certificates of Appropriateness.

Houston Oral History Project
The Houston Oral History project is capturing for future generations, the unique perspective of Houston's history from interesting and famous eyewitnesses to our city's history.
