2009 Kickoff, National Disabilities Awareness Month

October is National Disabilities Awareness Month (NDAM).  This observance reminds us that people with diverse abilities are valuable, contributing members of our communities while acknowledging their continued struggle and determination to be included at all levels of society.

Proclamation      Dionysus Singers

On, Thursday, October 1, 2009, the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) hosted its first NDAM event as a National Disabilities Awareness Month Kick-off in the West End Multi-Service Center auditorium.  Council Members Khan, Adams, Johnson and Gonzales presented the proclamation (above left) pronouncing October as NDAM.  Present were representatives from the County Judge’s Office, several city departments, Houston Commission on Disabilities, City Council Members and more than 17 community agencies.  MOPD CARE Awards were presented to COH department directors of 3-1-1, Affirmative Action, Citizen’s Assistance Office, General Services/Parking Management, Health & Human Services, Housing & Community Development, Parks & Recreation, and Public Works & Engineering, for services provided to people with disabilities. Breaking the barrier of stereotypes with their world-class performance, the Dionysus Theater Group (above right) inspired and moved the audience to tears as they gained a new understanding and admiration of people with disabilities.

Ms. E’s Kitchen received rave reviews on her poultry croissants, veggie bowtie pasta salad and vanilla cream cake slices.

Door prizes were two $25 dining certificates for Artista Restaurant and three T-Shirts from the Housing and Employment Resources Expo (HERE) for people with disabilities.

Very special thanks to JoAnn Schulman, Administrative Associate, building security and maintenance for setting up the room.  Also, a special thanks to mistress of ceremonies Claudia Magallan, Disability Navigator (Workforce Solutions - Gulf Coast).
