Houston Fire Department Community Interaction

Firefighter teaches fire safety to citizens

Community Interaction Purpose : To promote and encourage positive interaction with the community, specifically between the firefighters and the neighborhoods in which they serve. To develop a relationship between the Houston Fire Department and the citizens of Houston by generating fire department-related activities in the community. These activities should focus on fire safety education and awareness, as well as educating the public about the fire service.

Programs

Adopt A Fire Station - The Adopt-A-Fire Station Program was created to give citizens and civic, professional and business groups a formal vehicle by which they may make tangible donations to the fire stations of their choice.

Citizens' Fire Academy - The Houston Fire Department Citizen's Fire Academy is designed to increase understanding of fire and emergency medical operations and to promote citizen interaction with HFD firefighters and paramedics. The program is designed to enhance awareness of the department's capabilities and limitations; develop realistic expectations of response times from the point of dispatch; and to develop a cooperative relationship between firefighters and the citizens of Houston.

Get Alarmed Houston! -The "Get Alarmed Houston" program was introduced by HFD in December 2001, challenging the private industry to donate and help with installing smoke detectors. As a result of this challenge, several companies have stepped up to the plate to help insure Houstonians have working smoke detectors.

SAFE Congregation SAFE Community - Many of us have been working diligently to prevent fires in homes and places of worship.  The Public Affairs Division of the Houston Fire Department wants to help the members of your congregation  prevent fire related deaths and injuries where ever they occur. We are especially concerned about fire safety in the home because that is where people are most at risk.

Fire Truck Visits, Station Tours, and Parades - Fire Trucks can come to your school, although they will remain in service. It must be scheduled with at least 4 weeks notice.

Bicycle Registration - Citizens may register their bicycle at any Houston Fire Department Station. For more information call the HFD Public Affairs Division at 713-495-7900.

Public Education - The Public Education Division seeks to reduce fire losses (i.e. lives and property) from the dangers of accidental fire through fire prevention and fire response procedures education.

Safety Presentations - There are several safety presentations offered by the Houston Fire Department.
