HFD Honors Department's Trailblazers at Annual Breakfast
February 29, 2008

The Houston Fire Department honored six HFD "Trailblazers" and awarded a local youth a scholarship during the Third Annual Trailblazers Breakfast, today, Feb. 29, 2008, at 9 a.m. in the Westchase Houston Marriott, 2900 Briarpark Dr.

Fire Chief Phil Boriskie, Council Member Wanda Adams and other
representatives from the City and the fire department recognized the first black fire marshal, the first hispanic deputy chief, the first black communication deputy chief, the first female senior captain, the first black union president and a special "topgun". This year, a scholarship was also given to a Houston area youth.

The first breakfast, in 2006, honored and thanked the Class of 1955 - the first class of
African-Americans to be sworn in as HFD firefighters. The goal of this annual breakfast
is to recognize the trailblazer's efforts while seeking to establish a scholarship fund for
deserving young students who wish to continue their education after completing high
school.

The Trailblazers event was envisioned by Executive Assistant Chief Rick Flanagan and
endorsed by Fire Chief Boriskie, because of their commitment to the integrity of the fire
department and to honor the pioneers in the department.
