Massive Smoke Alarm Installation
April 27, 2007

On Saturday, April 28, 2007, The Houston Fire Department's Public Affair Division, Members of the Citizens Fire Academy and Alumni Association and Members of the Community Emergency Response Team will be installing smoke alarms in homes of citizens who could not otherwise afford or obtain the life-saving device.

Volunteers will be meeting at 8:30am in the grocery store parking lot located at the corner of N. Main and Hogan, next to Fire Station 9. The volunteers will install smoke alarms in the neighborhoods around this location.

The volunteers hope to install 300-400 smoke alarms in this economically at risk area of town during the installation effort. The volunteers will be either in an HFD uniform or have Fire Department or CERT IDs and will also be passing out batteries for those homes that just need a working battery in their smoke alarm.

When it comes to smoke alarms, silence can be deadly. National and local statistics reflect this deadly silence with more than 50 percent of all residential fatal fires not having a working smoke alarm.

The Houston Fire Department will be hosting another mass installation effort in June.

If you are in need of a smoke alarm or know someone in the City of Houston who needs a working smoke alarm, please call our Public Affairs Division at 713-495-7900. We will determine if you meet the qualifications and schedule an appointment to install your smoke alarm.

All smoke alarms are provided through donations or grants. For more information on how you or your company can help the Fire Department with this effort, please call our Public Affairs Division at 713-495-7900.
