Firefighters will participate in several events honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.
At 8:59 a.m. , Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt, Houston Fire Department Chief Phil Boriskie, members of the HPD Command Staff and other dignitaries held ceremony in commemoration of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The ceremony took place adjacent to the Houston Police Memorial at 2400 Memorial Drive. Chiefs Hurtt and Boriskie laid a wreath at the memorial, followed by a bell-ringing ceremony and a 21-gun salute. The 8:59 start time coincided with the precise moment the first World Trade Center Tower collapsed.
Firefighters at all of the Houston Fire Stations simultaneously commemorated the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent losses suffered at the World Trade Center with a single citywide salute to fallen firefighters, law enforcement, military personnel, and civilians, and to salute the extraordinary response of the entire American fire service to the tragic events that have changed all of our lives. The event was coordinated to occur at the exact moment the World Trade Center events occurred.
H-E-B will honor our nation’s firefighters for their dedication and selfless service with the fifth annual company-wide volunteer program Helping Heroes on Friday, Sept. 11. More than 800 Greater Houston-area H-E-B Partners (employees) from more than 60 H-E-B stores, including local distribution centers, will visit local fire stations to serve breakfast and lunch to firefighters and help with around-the-station chores.
