HFD and CenterPoint Energy Team Up To "Alarm Houston"

WHAT: CenterPoint Energy will present $20,000 to the Houston Fire Department
to purchase smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 3 p.m.

WHERE: Fire Station 8, 1919 Louisiana

DETAILS: The HFD and CenterPoint Energy have formed a partnership for the
third year in a row, to battle deadly residential fires in the Houston area through
the "Get Alarmed Houston" Program.

For the past several years, HFD has been able to purchase $30,000 worth of smoke alarms thanks to CenterPoint Energy's generous donations. This year, HFD will purchase additional new smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, including
hearing impaired smoke detectors and the new "talking" smoke detectors.

Fire Chief Phil Boriskie, representatives from Council Member Edward Gonzalez's Office and CenterPoint Energy will discuss the importance of having
working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, detector maintenance, installation
and how to test your detector. The Fire Department will also take this time to remind citizens that when they change their clocks the last weekend of October, to change the batteries in their smoke detectors as well.

Then, on October 24, 2009, volunteers from CenterPoint Energy and other
agencies will join forces with the HFD, going door-to-door installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the homes of our Houston neighbors in need. Volunteers will meet at Fire Station 12, 1502 Alber, 77009 at 8am and canvass the neighborhood around the station until noon.
