The Public Education Division seeks to reduce fire losses (i.e. lives and property) from the dangers of accidental fire through fire prevention and fire response procedures education.
Produce and distribute fire prevention safety literature , both in English and Spanish. Maintain Smoke Detector Giveaway Program for under-privileged elementary school children and senior citizens through the National SafeKids Network Program.
Install smoke detectors in low-income, high-risk areas to reduce the number of Houston-area children injured or killed in fires and to reduce the number of childhood injuries.
Teach fire safety issues, such as the hazards of playing with matches, stop/drop/roll, and the proper procedures on vacating a burning building, etc. both in classrooms and in the department's Kids' Safety House , a mobile house on wheels designed to teach fire safety techniques.
Provide Fire Extinguisher training using films and "hands-on" demonstrations.
Enforce codes and standards pertaining to prevention of fire in senior citizen occupancies.
General Fire Safety Education- Provides general fire safety and fire extinguisher training to the general public in civic clubs, hospitals, hotels, motels, dormitories, special occupancies, nursing homes and to homeowners. Offers general fire safety to child care facilities and elementary schools through the use of puppet shows and a mobile safety trailer. Bilingual literature is produced for various fire safety programs as well as home escape plans, smoke detector information, coloring books and general fire prevention.
