FLEX IN THE CITY > FLEXIBLE WOK OPTIONS > FLEX TIME

Flextime has become a widespread and popular scheduling option. U.S. employees on flextime schedules more than doubled between the late '80s and 2005, with approximately 43% of the U.S. full-time workforce enjoying flexibility in their start and departure times. Flextime is also gaining popularity worldwide, for instance, 29% of German businesses offer flextime to their employees.

The benefits of flextime include:

  • reduced absenteeism
  • increased productivity
  • reduced overtime expenses
  • elimination of tardiness
  • increased employee job-satisfaction
  • decreased traffic around job sites

Because of longer days, differing start and stop times, and varying days off, companies who use flextime are often able to expand customer service hours and better service clients in different time zones, without increases in staff size, or increasing overtime costs.

One of the most sought after job characteristics of today's workers are flextime work options. Employers who offer flextime to their employees have an advantage, over their competitors that do not, in attracting potential employees, and in employee retention through increased job satisfaction and better morale, and enjoy increases in productivity, and decreases in absenteeism.
