FLEX IN THE CITY > FLEXIBLE WOK OPTIONS > TELECOMMUTING

Telecommuting is for many, the closest to the ideal job. In fact, it is often one of the most enticing, and sought after job characteristics of today's most in demand job seeking professionals.

Recent estimates indicate between 9 and 24 million employees (approximately 10% of the work force) telecommute to some degree in the U.S. alone. Some of the biggest companies that encourage telecommuting include: AT&T, IBM, Merrill Lynch, American Express, Hewlett-Packard, as well as a number of government agencies.

Benefits of telecommuting:

  • Increased productivity
  • Reduced absenteeism
  • Higher retention
  • Higher job satisfaction
  • Savings in office operating expenses
  • Savings in compensation packages
  • Advantage in recruiting
  • Reduced traffic around work sites

At Merrill Lynch, approximately 3,500 employees telecommute. After only one year of implementation, an increase of 15-20% productivity, a 6% decrease in turnover, and 3.5 fewer sick days, was reported.

Companies, who offer telecommuting to certain employees and job descriptions, have a considerable advantage over companies that do not, with access to a larger labor pool, higher satisfaction and employee retention, and increased productivity.

Additionally, because many employees often favor telecommuting over other compensations and benefits, companies enjoy increased productivity without increased expense.
