Health department, AIDS Ministry encourage participation in Black Church Week of Prayer
The Houston Department of Health and Human Services and the Urban AIDS Ministry Task Force encourage local congregations to participate in the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS during the week of March 3-9.
Recommended activities include making HIV and AIDS the focus of the worship service on Sunday, March 3, sponsoring at least one HIV/AIDS educational program during the designated week and making HIV/AIDS information available to the church members.
The task force is a coalition of area faith leaders committed to reducing the spread of HIV in Houston’s black community and respond to the AIDS epidemic.
Black adults account for 59 percent of the new HIV infections in Houston and Harris County. AIDS cases in Houston and Harris County reported to the department since 1981 now total 19,133.
Last year more than 10,000 churches across the nation sponsored events during the weeklong observance.
For more information or to register a church for the observance, call the department at 713-794-9397.
