News Release - Thursday, March 2, 2000
Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS

Sunday, March 5 through Saturday, March 11, local churches will observe the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS.  The purpose of this national awareness program is to educate African American religious congregations and mobilize them to become community centers for education about HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and compassionate care.

The special week is sponsored by the Balm of Gilead, founded in 1989, is the nations largest AIDS awareness program targeting African Americans.  Led by the Black clergy, the week of prayer occurs during the Lenten season.  The week is observed by over 10,000 churches nationally.

The 1999 HIV infection reports for Houston indicate that 59 percent of new HIV reports were in African Americans.  The city and the county declared a state of emergency for the public health crisis on World AIDS Day, December 1, 1999.  The Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) will initiate a media campaign later this month targeting the African American community with HIV prevention messages.
