Overview
Mission Statement
To encourage collaboration between public health agencies, community-based
organizations, private physicians, HIV-infected and HIV-affected
individuals to help strengthen awareness on HIV and AIDS in the Latino
community.
Who We Are
Based out of the Houston Department of Health and Human Services,
the Latino HIV Task Force is made up of community members, City
of Houston employees, contracted agency employees, volunteers,
retirees, community-based organization employees, etc. All
parties interested in reducing the number of HIV transmission
in the Latino community are welcomed to attend.
What We Do
At the beginning of every year, LHTF members vote 2 to 5 major events
that the group would like to participate in that year. Events are
customarily health fairs, concerts, and events that cater to the Latino community.
Past events include Fiestas Patrias at the Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston
Hispanic Forum’s Career and Education Day,
Cinco de Mayo events, etc. The group enjoys an open-table discussion
format, in which all opinions are heard and respected. Discussion topics
include, but are not limited to, statistics, trends and current events.
Meeting Dates and Times
The LHTF meets as needed depending on what events the group is participating
in or sponsoring. At times, the group meets
as often as weekly; other times, the group can go as long as two
months between meetings. Customarily, the group meets on Wednesdays
from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., and rarely meets for longer than 1 ½ hours
at any one meeting.
