The Houston READ Commission promotes economic self-sufficiency and
individual determination through programs that offer Adult Basic Education
(ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), General Education Diploma
(GED) preparation, family literacy, financial and computer literacy. The
READ Commission work in partnership with other local agencies to promote
self sufficient individuals in the work place and provides referrals for
other needed services. Financial Literacy classes take place every other

Target Hunger is an agency that works with service providers, community
leaders, volunteers and residents to alleviate hunger in underserved families through out Houston’s inner city neighborhoods. This program provides
hunger relief through edification, counseling, and education. Nutrition
classes are on Monday 10am-12pm. This program also welcomes volunteers.

The Senior Program provides daily meals, entertainment, health educational
classes, daily aerobics classes, transportation, and field trips for senior
citizens in the community. Implements programs to meet the needs of
all attending senior citizens by linking them to the in house agencies to provide them with assistance as needed.

YMCA Success by Six is a program designed to provide quality support to
families and young mothers with children from birth to 6 years of age. The
objective is to strengthens parents by providing education. The YMCA
Success by Six program strengthen family life by providing Parenting
classes, Anger Management, Domestic Violence, Basic Substance Abuse
and One-on-One Counseling to promote school readiness, positive education
and self-sufficiency.

Police officers and Constables working in partnership to provide assistance
to the public. They provide assistance with citizen complaints and provide
useful information. Their visibility works as a deterrent to reduce crime in

The Mayor’s Citizens’ Assistance Office (MCAO) mission is to improve the
quality of life for all Houstonians by promoting efficient and effective city
services. This office encourages community involvement, participation,
handling individual citizens’ concerns, and supporting neighborhood revitalization
efforts throughout the City of Houston.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special supplemental nutrition
program which provides health care referrals, nutrition education and
nutritious foods to pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, and
children under five who have nutrition health-related problems.

Children's Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) provides insurance coverage for
children from birth through age of 18 who cannot be approved for Medicaid
and cannot afford private health insurance. CHIP provides enrollment
fees and co-payments for doctor visits, prescriptions and other services that
are based on family income. If your child is approved for Medicaid, you will
not have to pay an enrollment fee or make co-payments for doctor visits,
prescriptions or other services for that child. To qualify for CHIP/Medicaid, families financial income must be below limits based on household
size. To apply for CHIP/Medicaid the following is needed: Proof of
Income, proof of expenses such as receipts, proof of citizenship for applicant,
and Social Security Card. If applying for CHIP prenatal, a person may
still be approved with lack of proof of citizenship.

older. Activities include softball, flag football, volleyball and basketball.

Provide year round recreational activates for youth 4 to 18 years of age.
Sport activates consist of flag football, softball, T-Ball, soccer, volleyball,
