Asian American Pacific Islander Health Summit in Houston

The Houston Health Department (HHD), in partnership with Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services (HCPHES), the Asian American Health Coalition/HOPE Clinic and other community organizations, will host the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Health Summit in Houston on Friday, November 20, 2015 at the Rice BioScience Research Collaborative, 6500 Main Street, Houston, TX 77005.

Texas has the third largest Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) population in the United States. Frequently, the health needs of this rapidly growing and diverse population are misunderstood and overlooked. This summit will provide valuable information to everyone that works or interacts with the Asian American community, especially public health representatives, researchers, elected officials and community leaders and members.

Speakers will include national, state and local experts on Asian American Pacific Islander health discussing these important topics: the changing demographics of the AAPI population, mental health, and effective outreach to smaller AAPI populations with limited English proficiency, refugee health issues, and needs of the Asian elderly population.

“This summit will offer a great opportunity to identify the challenges and issues that our Asian American community members face and help us improve the health of Harris County as a whole,” said Dr. Umair A. Shah, Executive Director of Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services (HCPHES).

“Houston is making numerous efforts to become a healthier city,” said Stephen Williams, director of Houston Health Department. “We will continue to collaborate with a wide range of partners to ensure healthy places for Houstonians to live, work, play and thrive.”
