Food Access Programs


Food security is the condition where all people at all times have physical and economic access to safe and nutritious foods in sufficient amounts to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life. The Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets offer a variety of food incentives and vouchers to increase the purchasing power of participants while supplies lasts.

WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)

The WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is associated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, popularly known as WIC. The WIC Program provides supplemental foods, health care referrals and nutrition education at no cost to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to 5 years of age, who are found to be at nutritional risk. Clients must participate in the WIC program to be eligible for the FMNP vouchers. FMNP vouchers are a $30 once-a-year benefit to WIC participants.

How to participate:

  • Register at any Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets during the months of April through September.
  • Bring a current WIC shopping list.
  • FMNP vouchers can be used to buy authorized produce.
  • No cash change is given for vouchers. Lost, stolen or expired vouchers cannot be replaced.

FRESH Rx

Prescribing fruits and veggies. The FRESH Rx program is modeled after a fruit and vegetable prescription program designed to support clinic clients identified as food insecure or are at risk of diet-related chronic diseases. During the clinical visit or a health education session, participants are issued a prescription voucher to be redeemed at any Get Moving Houston Farmers Market, April through October. Each health center location participation rules and FRESH Rx dollar value varies.

How to participate:

  • Schedule and participate in the number of clinic visits or education classes in a six-month period at a participating health center or clinic.
  • Set your healthy eating goals with your provider or health educator.
  • Receive a prescription for fruits and vegetables — FRESH Rx — to be redeemed at any Get Moving Houston Farmers Market, April through October.

Double Up Houston

Double your SNAP benefit! Double Up Houston is a dollar-for-dollar match food and nutrition assistance program benefiting SNAP recipients. The program is facilitated by Urban Harvest in partnership with Rebuild Texas Fund, William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation and Texas Hunger Initiative. Shoppers will receive a dollar-for-dollar match up to $20 at Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets and other local farmers markets across Houston.

How to participate:

  • Go to any Get Moving Houston Farmers Markets information table.
  • Swipe your Lone Star Card for any amount up to $20 and get the same amount in additional fruits and vegetables, while funding supplies last.
  • No cash change is given for Double Up Houston incentives.
