CITY OF HOUSTON HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR MILTON WILSON ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT

Milton WilsonOctober 18, 2006 -- City of Houston Department of Housing and Community Development Director Milton Wilson today announced his plan to retire after nearly two years of service at the city and more than 32 years in public service. Mayor Bill White thanked Wilson who joined the city after serving as the Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration's Houston District that served 32 counties.

"Milton Wilson leaves the City Housing Department on better footing and much more able to help Houstonians who most need assistance," said Mayor White.

Under Wilson's leadership, the Housing Department built a stronger working relationship with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

That relationship led to the strengthening of the Emergency Home Repair Assistance program and the First Time Homebuyers program.

The homebuyer program provides access to millions of dollars from HUD to help provide affordable housing for citizens of Houston. Wilson also provided direction in the city's efforts to stabilize its Multi-Family Housing Program.

"I thank the Mayor White for his leadership and all the help he has given me," said Wilson. "I leave with nothing but admiration for the hard-working employees of the City of Houston. At the end of the day, my family and I have determined that its time for us to spend more time together."

Wilson has agreed to stay on in his position until a new director is chosen.
