Margaret Baptiste has strengthened the credibility and reliability of the Human Resources customer service division since she arrived four years ago. She remains professional and friendly even with difficult customers. In 2001, she received the Customer Service Award, the department’s highest honor.

With her staff and co-workers, Ms. Baptiste builds morale and camaraderie through organizing birthday celebrations. For the last three years, she has taken leadership of HR’s annual Combined Municipal Campaign, motivating by example as the department has met its goal of 100 percent participation and exceeded its goals for dollars donated.

Ms. Baptiste has not missed a day of work since she came on board as a city employee in 1999.

Recently, her comprehensive knowledge of HMO Blue Texas’ health plans kept a retiree from having to pay a $300,000 bill after a six-month hospital stay. Because of Ms. Baptiste’s diligence, the hospital had to write off the charges.

She’s also a spiritual counselor for Greenspoint Baptist Church. Ms. Baptiste helps people of all ages throughout the congregation with almost any need, whether it’s food, shelter or advice. She completed an 82-week course in discipleship and is involved in the “Girls’ Rites of Passage” program. In it, she mentors girls in the 6th grade and older on how to function socially, financially, culturally and nutritionally.

The lives of city employees and all Houstonians are richer for Margaret Baptiste’s contributions, and we proudly present her with the Bravo Award.
