SANDY has been with the Houston Public Library System for 22 years and today is a Librarian IV and manager of the Central Children’s Room. Her understanding of the library’s personal aspects and technical services has made her a perennial favorite among colleagues and supervisors.
She tirelessly contributed many personal hours to serving the needs of Hurricane Katrina evacuees. With her typical quick responsiveness, Sandy spearheaded the George R. Brown Convention Center’s mini branch library for Katrina evacuees, allowing them full access to free books, magazines and computers. She successfully solicited donations of furniture and toys and organized a children’s area for them to play, do crafts, draw or play computer games. Her written procedures on how to rotate computer privileges ensured each child’s safety and led to a seamless transition between shifts.
Sandy is committed to her community as well. She is vice-president of the Spring Branch Estates II Civic Association, which is actively involved in maintaining a high quality of life for community residents.
She is a member of the Children’s Round Table of the Texas State Library Association and served as chairperson in 2000-2001.
For 15 years, Sandy volunteered as a Red Cross swimming instructor, and annually completes an auction quilt for the Spring Branch Future Farmers of America scholarship fund. This year her quilt sold for $3,500. Good work, Sandy.
We present this BRAVO! Award to Sandra Farmer.
