Besides working a full-time job, for 17 years, Mr. Hutcherson has also worked as a volunteer Harris County reserve deputy constable in Precinct 1. Recently, he was promoted to sergeant, and now supervises and trains other reserve deputy constables.

Mr. Hutcherson earned his certification as a peace officer on his time and at his expense. He also pays for his uniforms, safety equipment, weapons and a 40-hour continuing education course every two years. His duties include writing traffic citations, handling domestic disputes, making arrests, serving arrest warrants on offenders and testifying in court.

He has provided security for Presidents Richard Nixon, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and for numerous charity events.

In addition, Mr. Hutcherson volunteers in the Tomball High School Naval Junior ROTC program, taking students on camping trips and chaperoning their honor guard and drill team competitions.

Mr. Hutcherson started working as an equipment operator I Aug. 24, 1981. Now, a maintenance manager with 329 employees and a $32 million budget, he has 13 years perfect attendance. During Hurricane Alicia, he worked more than 72 consecutive hours, and more than 48 consecutive hours during Tropical Storm Allison, coordinating high-water rescue vehicles.

Last year, after he saved an elderly man who had collapsed in a restaurant, Mayor Brown and City Council honored him with an official proclamation. When the man collapsed, Mr. Hutcherson told employees to call 911 He restrained the man who was suffering convulsions and stopped the bleeding.

Because of his selfless decision to make his community safer without expecting any money in return, and for providing our youth with an outstanding role model, we proudly present Gary Hutcherson with the Bravo Award.
