When George Thomas’ wife suffered a heart attack, the emergency medical squad arrived a few minutes after he called 911.

While they were at the door, his wife passed out, Thomas wrote. The EMS team rushed into action.

“I want you to know that I have never seen such a group of people work together in such a smooth, efficient manner,” Thomas wrote. “They were so well-trained and so well-organized that I could not tell who was in charge. There was not shouting, no heroic displays, and no discussion of what to do next.

“It was a great display of a well-oiled machine.”

The EMS team moved a sofa, coffee table and other furniture so they’d have room to work on his wife, Thomas wrote. After they loaded her for transport to the hospital, those who stayed behind cleaned up the scene and replaced the furniture.

Because of their great work, his wife survived, Thomas wrote.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

When her 2-year-old son Cruz suffered a seizure, turned blue and stopped breathing, Mindy Garcia took him to the nearby security desk at the Hermann Professional Building. There, Sgt. Brigido Chavez was working extra employment.

Chavez began CPR, and Cruz started breathing. By the time the emergency medical squad arrived, Cruz was stabilized, wrote E. B. Leatherman, director of security services at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

“Thanks to Sgt. Chavez’s quick thinking, this child’s life was saved,” Leatherman wrote. “Everyone here at the hospital sincerely appreciates what he did.
