Heroic Actions

Ronald Sessum
HPD
Judy King’s co-worker, Kevin Foster, began choking while eating lunch in the Four Seasons’ employee cafeteria. Several other employees noticed Foster’s discomfort and realized the situation was growing graver, but none could help, King wrote.

Foster got up from his table and walked a few feet, trying to catch his breath. He gasped for air and began changing color.

“Several of us were going in different directions looking for help and somewhat in a panic,” King wrote.

Then Officer Ronald Sessum, who was sitting at another table in the cafeteria, saw Foster, grabbed him from behind and applied the Heimlich maneuver. Foster started breathing again.

“Several people approached Officer Sessum to thank him,” King wrote. “He was gracious, modest and viewed his heroic behavior as something anyone would have done. But we were all grateful he was there.”

James Kay, Andrew Taravella
HPD
After leaving the gym, Charles Trussell suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, Officer James Kay, who was returning from lunch, was walking beside him, Trussell wrote. Kay started CPR on Trussell and called Officer Andrew Taravella. The two men took turns giving Trussell CPR until the ambulance arrived.

“Thanks to Officer Kay’s quick response and sharpness of mind, I am able to sit here and write this letter,” Trussell said. “I appreciate these officers and the training HPD has provided them. Without men of this kind of character, I would never have made it.”
