Good Samaritans

J.P Tyler
Police
Another vehicle slammed into the rear of her car as Deanna Berger was turning right from the Interstate 10 feeder into an auto dealership. Then the vehicle sped past her, Berger wrote.

Off-duty officer J.P. Tyler was driving on I-10 and saw the accident. On his personal motorcycle, Tyler exited the freeway and chased down the other vehicle. Then, he waited with Berger until another HPD unit arrived. Tyler was still discussing the incident with the other officers when Berger left an hour later.

“This would have been a hit-and-run if it hadn’t been for a Good Samaritan in a police uniform,” Berger wrote. “I appreciate his kind and professional actions more than anyone could ever know. It’s comforting to know there still are some good people left in this world.”

Travis Schmidt
Police
Officer Travis Schmidt responded when Patricia Burns’ 20-year-old daughter blew out a tire at Interstate 45 and State Highway 59.

Schmidt showed real professionalism and compassion, wrote Burns, who works for the Bridgeport Police Department. He even gave her daughter a ride to the airport so she wouldn’t miss her flight.

“I want to highly commend Officer Travis for keeping my child safe when there was a real possibility of a different outcome,” Burns wrote. “I know from experience that this officer went above and beyond to assist my daughter when she was alone, frightened and pressed for time. He could have left her with a wrecker driver to fend for herself. He not only saw her safely to the airport, but he also ensured that her car was not left to vandals or thieves.

“I bragged to everyone in my department about how impressed I was with Houston PD.”
