Marc Estes’ infant son began choking during dinner at a restaurant. The baby’s coughing didn’t dislodge the food. He started losing color, stiffening up and not breathing, Estes wrote.

Sgt. Louis Oviedo, who had been sitting at a nearby table, performed an infant Heimlich. That worked to loosen the food. The baby snuggled in Oviedo’s arms for several minutes while regaining his strength, Estes wrote.

“Sgt. Oviedo’s recognition of the problem and willingness to help saved our son’s life,” Estes wrote. “I thank the Houston Police Department for the training this officer has received, and I thank Sgt. Oviedo for his acts of heroism.”
