Promote your health by utilizing the city’s benefits plans, which offer wellness exams, screenings, immunizations, information and management resources that cost you little or nothing. Check this chart and find out how you can take charge at no charge.

Free city-sponsored wellness programs
Blue Access: Provides online access at www.bcbstx.com to the Mayo Clinic Health Information Web site where members can take a health risk assessment test, and use self-management tools designed to help members maintain a healthy lifestyle. Also provides important information for health plan members about their coverage.

Disease Management Program: Provides disease management programs for health plan members who have chronic health conditions. Participation helps members and their doctors find the best way to manage conditions and decrease the intensity and frequency of symptoms. 24/7 Nurseline: Provides health plan members with 24-hour access to toll-free telephone counseling through nurses available to answer questions about health issues. HMO members call (800) 581-0353. PPO members call (800) 581-0368.

Special Beginnings: Is a pregnancy program to help expectant mothers better understand and manage their pregnancy. To enroll call, (800) 462-3275.

Employee Assistance Program: Provides free, confidential counseling available to active and retired employees and their dependents. For an appointment, call (713) 866-4242.

Benefits Pulse Newsletter: A quarterly publication providing information about health issues and trends, utilization of the benefits plans and helpful seasonal information. Visit www.benefitspulse.org to view.

Wellness Leave:* Compensable Sick Plan gives 8 hours of paid time-off for doctor/dentist visits for wellness reasons after an employee has been employed for one benefit year, Sept. 1 – Aug. 31. Eligible services include dental, vision, well-woman, well-man and physical exams, as well as other wellness-related doctor visits. Contact your HR liaison for information.

Onsite Flu Shots:* Provides annual flu shots to city employees at various worksites at a reduced rate.

City Blood Drives: Provides employees the opportunity to donate blood at several work sites. In addition to helping to help maintain the blood supply for the medical community, employees also learn personal health information, like their cholesterol level and blood type. Annual Sports Day: Promotes active participation for employees in a variety of competitive sports that include golf, volleyball, baseball, and walking. Contact Linda Williams at (713) 837-7474 for more information.

Wellness Seminars: Presented by professional medical personnel who discuss a variety of health-related issues, including heart disease, asthma, cholesterol, high-risk pregnancy, diabetes, and weight loss programs. For more information, contact Mosis Willett at (713) 837-9382.

City Health Fair: An annual health fair for city employees and retirees sponsored by HMOBlue Texas. The fair hosts a variety of health-care vendors and provides health screenings that include blood pressure, vision, cholesterol, and bone mass. The city’s Health Fair is 9 a.m.- 2 p.m., Thursday, April 20, 2006 in the George R. Brown Convention Center Exhibit Hall D. There’ll be free parking with your city ID, badge or check stub.

Texas Round-Up
City of Houston employees and dependents are invited to participate in the annual Texas Round-Up. This fun-filled program runs from Feb. 13 to April 29. It’s a statewide effort encouraging all Texans to incorporate daily physical activity into their lives.

It’s much more than just a race. The Texas Round-Up is a motivational and interactive program designed to encourage Texans to live a more active and healthy lifestyle.

The 3rd annual event will culminate April 29 with a local 10K run/walk and 5K run/walk. Other activities will occur in Austin hosted by Gov. Rick Perry.
