What benefits am I entitled to now that my employment is pending termination?
Q. I was in a serious car accident that left me disabled; my employment is now pending termination. Are there benefits to which I may be entitled?
A. You should contact your HR liaison or Human Resources, benefits division to discuss your eligibility for city benefits.
- If you are participant in the Compensable Sick Leave Plan and have worked for the city for at least two years, you may qualify for a benefit under the Long Term Disability Plan. The monthly benefit will be at least 50 percent your pre-disability wages. You must apply for LTD within 12 months after your disabling condition caused you to begin missing work.
- If you qualify for a disability or service pension, you also qualify to maintain your medical, dental and reduced life insurance.
- If you don’t qualify for a pension benefit, you qualify to pay monthly premiums for medical and dental coverage under provisions of COBRA for 18 months.
- If you exhaust all of your personal leave hours before you qualify for LTD or a pension, you may qualify to participate in the Accrued Leave Donation program. The program allows employees to donate vacation hours to your sick leave bank so that you may continue to receive a paycheck.
- You may qualify for a premium waiver under the life insurance plan. This provision allows you to maintain the full value of your voluntary life insurance without premium payment. The waiver ends when you are approved for a pension.
- If your condition is terminal within nine months, you may qualify for an Accelerated Death Benefit under the life insurance plan. You could receive 75 percent of your life insurance in a lump sum payment. The balance will be left for your beneficiary.
- You may convert any remaining life insurance to an individual policy.
